Fireplace needs a facelift

Our fireplace needs to be lower to the floor and needs updating. What would you suggest to do, but also stay in style for a long time?

I don’t think there is anything wrong with fireplace.

I would suggest decluttering right side of built in and a larger piece of art.

We were hoping to put the tv above it but it’s to high. So we though lowering it and new mantle?

Maybe there is a wall bracket for the TV where you can slide the TV up and down. Or maybe with an angle mounted it wouldn´t look too high.

Has any one ever removed tiles and lowered a fireplace ? And changed out the tiles to a lighter version? Our room is not that big and we can’t sit back enough for it to be that high.

I gave you a mount that you can use that will lower tv over fireplace. It makes no sense to tear apart and redo fireplace to hang a tv over it when you can just use the mount.

Replacing the tile and mantel are not that big of a job. However, lowering the actual fireplace may be. You may have to open up the entire wall above the fireplace to access the chimney pipe because it will all have to be lowered and you may need to add an additional 8" or so to the stack depending on how high the current hearth is.

An alternative is to remove the mantel surround and use a shorter shelf or have no mantel at all and just some trim around the tile.

If you choose to use a lower shelf, you must refer to the owner's manual of the fireplace to determine the minimum required height of the shelf, which will depend on the depth of the shelf.

If you can post the make and model of the fireplace, I can help you with that. You will find a label somewhere inside the fireplace attached to the black metal. Usually near the opening on the top or sides behind the mesh. Post a picture of that label.

Just thought I'd put together this mockup to show the option of removing the mantel shelf. I would also use a Custom Single Panel Fireplace Screen with some Andirons to cover up the prefabricated fireplace.

One concern here is overheating the TV. Having a mantel shelf helps divert some of the heat away from the TV. There are some metal shelves available that can function as a heat deflector, I just didn't have time to add that in this mockup.

An additional concern is that no you will have quite a lot of blank wall above the TV and adding anything to that space may conflict with the fireplace and TV and look to busy.

I am a fireplace specialist, not an interior designer, so maybe someone with more expertise in that area can chime in after seeing this mockup.

Is there no other place for the tv in your room? My home had a built in area above the fireplace for a tv when I moved in about 15 years ago. Even with a large room, it was awful for watching tv (viewing upwards is a true pain in the neck). I had the area sheet rocked over and had the tv mounted on the opposite wall at an appropriate viewing level.

Yeah it’s a small room and a door to one side. We have been renovating but the tv is an issue. Currently we have small one on a small table.

Paint wall above mantle in a pretty black and your TV will disappear. Arranging the bookshelves would be an improvement in this space but I would work with the existing tile as it looks nice IMO. Best of luck.

the tiles fireplace needs to go. its reminiscent of 70s swinger. i dont think you can go wrong with stone. can you find another place for the tv? the mantle looks nice the way it is

Excuse the hot mess... we moved in 4 weeks ago and we are remodeling so many things at once.... but this fireplace 🤦‍♀️

With the curved top bookcases one either side, that skinny mantle with the dentil molding looks our of proportion to me. I would simplify with either a basic wood mantle similar to the tone of the floor, a more basic thicker mantle (without the dentil molding). Here's some ideas.

What about removing shelves and the middle divider of the built in and placing tv there?

I might suggest eliminating this particular mantle all together and replacing with a new mantle without legs that stretches the full width of the wall. You could keep a tile surround below that.

We had a similar problem in our old house and we decided to remove the existing mantle and had to also remove 4-5 layers of brick in order to mount TV lower so it’s at eye level . It was hard work but was worth it !

Yeah I’ve been thinking about some of the great ideas you guys have given me. Here are some of your ideas that I like 😊. Which one do you think would stay in style the longest and look good? Ok I’m not a graphic designer but hopefully you can tell what I’m thinking.

Natural stone like your #1 will always be timeless but more costly, but since that's a gas fireplace it doesn't make sense. #3 would be my preference in this case since it's classic, clean and simple.
