They look like some sort of iris. Have they bloomed? When did you first notice them?

Is that a yucca in the far left of the photo? Maybe they're offshoots of that plant.

I cleared out all my weeds and put mulch down a month ago. All of a sudden these are everywhere. I belong to a Facebook group who said it’s an invasive weed. But the root is so thick and my husband is using a hatchet to get it out. They all spreading all over.

Doesn't look like the right combination of root system to foliage for iris; I'd lean towards offshoots from that Adam's Needle, like gardenfanatic suggested.

What does offshoot mean? Weeds??

Offshoot refers to when plants spread by underground roots from a main plant.

I live in CA, I know the plant as yucca. It has a very large root system.

Maybe a mattock will help you remove the roots.

Any treatment/herbicide recommendations? We’ve been using a pickaxe. But it doesn’t end — the roots are everywhere
