Garden Clinic African Violets House Plants

Root rot on AV?

I'm a newbie when it comes to indoor plants, but received 6 AVs from a friend last winter when I was in a really bad place mentally. They brightened things up a lot, and I've been trying to keep them alive because of what they mean to me. I put them in 4" pots with AV potting soil, they are in a southwest window, and I water them every week or 2 (when they dry out, but not completely) by letting them sit in about 3" of warm water with AV food.They were doing awesome for awhile, but then I had to leave for a little over 2 weeks for a work assignment. My kind and well-meaning friend who was looking after the cat dumped a bunch of water on them, and when I came home, they had wet feet and now some have leaves that are turning yellow-brown. Is there anything I can do?

you already know what the problem is.. and there is little to do about it.. other than stop watering ....

in the meantime.. i would try propagating a few of the leaves that are still good ...

its not all that hard ...

The plants appear to be in pot liners that are inside ceramic (?) outer pots. If so, remove them from those outer pots so that they can dry out easier. The yellowing leaves are no big deal -- they actually look more like they were bleached from being in too much light. You can remove those lower discolored leaves if they bother you.

Thank you for the advice! It's been close to a month since the overwatering, since which they've definitely already gotten time to dry and be watered again; I was concerned when the leaves continued to yellow. I moved them to a more north facing window in case it's too much sun, and will also propagate a couple new starts. I already took a cutting of my favorite (thankfully unaffected) awhile back, and will do the same with these.
