Sandburs. They were the bane of my existence at my last house. Very difficult to get rid of in a large area like I had. Ugh! Nightmare plant.

Thank you. I had heard of them, but never associated them with this particular ouchie. Kind of strange. I've been here for many decades, but I've never really been overrun with them as much as this year. They're not in my lawn, but I think they are in a field I routinely walk through.

I gather the burs are on top of a long grassy stalk, and come out in August.

Ours came out all season, starting in late spring. Even in winter, while not actively growing, there are still stickers on the ground/grass. Just one of these turns into 1,858,034 ... so be careful not to walk through your yard after the field.

Yowza. I just pull a few off and throw them in my yard. Not smart, I guess. Actually, knowing they are seed heads, that should have struck me as a very dumb thing to do.

Go find them, hurry! 😄

I’m kidding. I’m sure your lawn is healthy and strong ... if one popped up, just dig deep to remove it. Your grass will choke them out.

Mine happened because I had to hire a lawn service one year — they kept mowing over and spreading them.

Yes - I got rid of them in my yard by patiently pulling every one out by the roots.
