How should a contractor should replace windows?

We told our contractor we wanted to replace everything on the window and casing, because it was old and ugly. The house is old and it seems like the casing and frame has been there 60 years ago. It is a disgusting unwaxed wood. I don't understand how this got miscommunicated, because they knew we wanted to change plain flat wide white frames. But I don't understand how they would have thought we would want to keep the original casing which would obviously look horrible with the white frames. Because they misunderstood this they cut our siding to get the window out and did not remove the casing. They put a frame on the outside to cover the area of the siding that was cut. Both me and my mother are furious that they did this, because they did not communicate that to us the siding would be cut. If we had know that we would not change the window. Also I know that the window can be removed without having to cut the siding. This is a visual change of our house that we have strongly objected to. To get rid of this look we probably have to pay to replace the siding. We have had a couple incidents with them of miscommunication, so now we paranoid asking every little thing they do and we are stressed we cannot completely monitor our contractor.

Should they have installed the window this way, or could they have removed the old window without cutting the siding?
