Range and range hood

Getting ready to start total kitchen reno. Buying new appliances and will finally be getting range hood over my stove. Most stores do not have range hoods to look at (or they have one). Has anyone mixed and matched their range brand and range hood brand? The range hoods seem more reasonably priced online at Amazon versus an appliance store or hardware store. I can save about $700 if I purchase a different brand online versus matching the brand of my stove.

I have Frigidaire and Cooktek induction units under a Wolf hood. Myriad custom hoods have been made that are not the same brand as the cooking appliance.

Please tour hood threads here for background you will need to specify your hood.

Several companies, such as Broan & Ventahood, specialize in kitchen ventilation and make a huge variety of hoods -- but don't make ranges at all. I have a "Best by Broan" hood over a GE Profile range. They both work great!

Patricia it will a 30" gas range. I've never had a hood so just wasn't sure if it needed to match or not. Thanks for all the input everyone. Now I feel much better about it!

How often do you cook and what styles?

Note that Vent-A-Hood is one of the loudest hoods that you can buy and they do not work as well as other options (and work even worse when people don't want to use them because of the noise). Great sales and marketing though. Wolf, Broan and Modernaire may be better alternatives, and better yet if you can do an inline blower remote from the hood.

I have a vent-a-hood and it certainly is not loud even on the highest setting. Had a Wolf hood in previous house and it sounded like a freight train and we hated using it.

A decade ago @clinresga measured the noise performance of two comparable systems, one by Vent-a-Hood and one conventional, and reported here that the VaH was louder. Newer VaH blowers may have reduced noise. I have not read of any measurements of recent systems that would allow comparison.

However, given that blade tip turbulence dominates, a VaH fan at the cook will always be louder than a axial or radial fan well away from the cook, particularly if a Fantech silencer can be fitted into the intermediate duct. If the hood is on a wall with an internal blower or with a same power immediately outside wall blower, then both will likely be similarly noisy unless the outside blower is oversized and run at reduced power.

? Tom, did you intend to tell us which hood it was? And does it capture and contain the plume from searing meat, or just from making rice.

LOL, @kaseki! We just left a VRBO rental where I was SO impressed with their Frigidaire hood while cooking noodles -- until we tried to brown ground beef. Total ventilation fail!
