Should I install water sofetener/RO thru the builder?

Hi all,

We live in an area where water contains LOTS of calcium and leaves white spots everywhere. We for sure need both water softener and RO but just aren't sure if we should put them thru a builder. They said $1400 for RO and havent got me back the pricing for water softener yet. (They will install RO in our utility room, not under the sink. Is there any advantage for this?)

That is something you can hire out easily enough on your own after taking possession of the home without paying his markup on. I would make a few phone calls to water treatment companies and see what the prices would be.

Step one: GET YOUR WATER TESTED. You need to know what is in your water to decide the treatment or may be no treatment will be needed at all.

No, don't go through the builder. As noted by millworkman it can be done right after closing by using a water softener vendor directly. The builder mark ups range from huge to enormous - and you get the worst product for the most money.

I would recommend using a water treatment dealer in your area, for the cost, and for serviceability. If the builder puts it in, no telling who can help you if there are any issues.
