Wide Brim sends up new flower stalk

Wide Brim blooms in my yard early to mid July. However, now it is sending up another flower. I looked at Rawson’s list for Reblooming hostas. He says the term “rebloom“ is a misnomer because hosta never rebloom on the same stalk. What happens is they send up a new stalk related to new roots. I have never had this happen on any other hosta. Has anyone else?

soooo .. what to do.. what to do ...

well .. a lot of the fall flowering hosta have red petioles ... so you could use the pollen or put pollen on this one .. and see if you could get a plant with red in its petioles ...

you would do that.. if you like this plants shape or leaf form.. or whatever ... perhaps a shape that encourages your ability to actually see the petioles short of being so drunk you fall face first into it.. often ... lol ... [i often call this an actual breeding goal]

the downside .. considering it might snow in a week up there.. is how you get the requisite 60 or 90 days for the seed to mature .. some peeps use sugar water and cut the scapes as late as they can.. but that is a rather short term fix .. i dont really think you could go 60 plus days with such and come out with viable seeds .. but who knows unless someone tries it ....

in the olden days.. when peeps use actual film to take pix.. some of the hardcore 'saved; pollen' in those film canisters in the freezer ... i lost interest in this subject soon enough ... but you could research it ... but... who needs this pollen in spring.. when the plant usually blooms.. so why bother.. eh????

blah.. blah.. blah ...

or you could just do a post.. and show us your little reblooming weirdo.. and we can thank you for the pic.. and be done with it ...

I had it this year on Pandora's Box and yes I have had it other years. Wide Brim must be happy.

Yep, as of today, I have a new bloom stalk on an old NOID that may be Gold Standard. We are getting snow and freeze tonight. Not happy about that.

I have also had Pandora's Box rebloom. Just enjoy it.

Yes a happy plant that put on new growth in time to give you a late bloom, enjoy! I have had it happen.

If it has time to open, it’s 57 and raining today, big drop from 80, so who knows whether the flower will open.

ken, all of that is interesting, but I don’t have the energy for it. I did take some pods from a few plants.....thought maybe I’d try my luck, but I am so tired today, I can’t even think about it.......how’s that for enthusiasm???

just bored.. and it was a teaching moment .... tying together a few other responses over the summer ...

btw ... this type of reflowering is what started eric smith on his project ... you remember that story dont you all ...

Sorry ken, didn’t mean to sound so snarky yesterday.....today’s another day. I don’t know if I know the Eric smith story.......is he the guy that has been cultivating fragrant hostas?? I don’t know the story ===>>> maybe you can share ......or someone else who knows the story.

Is this where the sugar water comes in?????? Before the bloom you cut and put in sugar water.......cutting the bottom a bit each day or every other and redoing the water at the same time? Then you hope it blooms and sets seed?? (Am I on the right track???

Someone——-give me the low down.......pluuueeeesse?
