Advice: Defining Property Border
Hi Houzzers,
Looking for some ideas to separate our property from our neighbors property. We have a good relationship, but we just want to show some distinction between the two lots and provide some clear guidance for our children as to how far they can play. Our community does have an HOA, which prevents us from using any privacy fences, so we are looking for a natural landscape option. As you can see from the photos, we have an unusually shaped property line and it is not intuitive without some definition where the border lies. (We actually have quite a large amount of land as depicted in photo #3, even 48 feet beyond the center of the Pin Oak, ~ 16 feet from edge current spread). We love the beauty of the Pin Oak, and do not desire to remove it, but would appreciate some recommendations on how to “anchor” that corner a little more.

I'd do shrubs that are kept to 6' to define your lot line at #3 but that are far enough toward your house to block the neighbor. Create a cozy nook idea, place a nice comfy garden bench or chairs in the nook. Draw the eye back to that area. Imagine this but instead of a wall, you'd have a dense hedge.

Thanks, all! I am thinking of maybe combining both main recommendations -- 1. a nice line of evergreens along the property line, as one approaches the pin oak from the drive way, and 2. in the actual corner, a hedge and some high shrubs behind the pin oak creating a small living space. I found some additional pictures, kind of going with tozmo1's idea. (Note, the first one has a pretty large living space - but I mainly liked the image for the dense hedge that helps create privacy behind the large trees)

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoI think I would plant arborvitae in a row to indicate the line. Plant the far edge and corners and along the south corner. Plant some for privacy. It is always nice to have a shared vista once the area is defined, so I would plant the minimum number to get the line established and leave gaps where a tree is not necessary.
I marked with green circles where I think trees would be a benefit.
