I love the great windows and elegant panels. Are you avoiding placing the piano by the windows to keep it out of the sun?
If not, switching the seating arrangement to a more central location facing the fireplace may work: try the 2 chairs at right angle to the sofa as your ottoman is quite large, and the third chair by the fireplace. Keep in mind a comfortable distance between each piece t make people feel they don't have to shout to have a conversation with those sitting on the other seats. I agree with Tyson Designs that a nice area rug encompassing your entire seating area would anchor it and warm up the room. You may need a console or sofa table behind the sofa if bringing it forward leaves too much dead space behind it: this becomes the perfect place for some accent pieces and nice books.

I prefer the angled position but why limit yourself to just one position? I love to rearrange my furniture about every six months. Try one arrangement for a while then the other. Variety is fun. There is no one correct answer here.

Yes, an area rug is definitely on the list of items to attend to, along with a sofa table (which, I hope will actually be the buffet, once I have time to paint it and can afford some built-ins in the television area). @Project Guru--I would love to put the piano in another location, but husband says the television stays put (to accomodate the surround sound etc..), so I'm making it work to keep my man happy (he puts up with my transferware problem). So far, I'm enjoying the process. I was considering either a royal blue rug to echo the blue and white chinoiserie vase lamps and other accessories that will eventually find their home on the console behind the couch, or a brown or spring green cut pile rug. I'm looking for something less busy, understated and elegant. Thoughts? Ideas?

@Dar--I like that answer! Now that I've tried several ways, I find I like them all for different reasons. All of them have their advantages and disadvantages. :-) It's nice to have a space large enough to be usable for a variety of functions!
