Dryer doesn’t dry properly on low and permanent press settings

I have an LG gas dryer and I can never get it to dry properly on either delicates or permanent press. Even if I set the setting to ”very dry” the clothes are always damp and I have to go through 3 or 4 reattempts before they are dry. Sometimes the dryer only runs for 5 additional minutes and stops the cycle again with still clearly damp clothes inside.

When I use normal or cotton/towels settings, then the clothes are dry even at normal and I don’t need to use more dry or extra dry options. However, using the normal or towels setting is not appropriate for some types of clothes because those settings run too hot for clothes that shrink easily.

The lint filter and dryer venting are clear.

What causes this problem of the dryer turning off with damp clothes only when the dryer runs in the cooler cycles like permanent press delicates cycles?

    I have a Samsung so maybe not a fair comparison, but on mine, the moisture sensing auto drying modes do not even work on LOW, only MED or HIGH. I use LOW for the timed cycles.

    A moisture sensor bar is located inside the dryer drum. When there are only a few items in the dryer they don't brush up against the sensor causing the dryer to think the load is dry. Try adding a few additional items to the load or use the timed cycle.

    Setting the dryer a smidgen off-level toward the sensor bars can help with sensor accuracy and small / lightweight loads by promoting the items to tumble toward the bars.

    I thought it could have been caused by smaller loads when using permanent press and delicates cycles, but today I tried a load that included sheets and a blanket that made the load at least 2/3 full and even though I set the dryer to “Very Dry,” the dryer still stopped with the some items still noticeably damp.

    I had to switch to Normal and risk fabric shrinkage for the moisture sensor to work as expected and not stop the cycle before all items are dry.

    Sensor dry still only seems to work properly when the set to Normal and Cotton/Towels. It still leaves the clothes damp on Permanent Press and Delicates even when setting the dryness level to “Very Dry.”

    I wonder if the moisture sensor is going bad or is this just a shortcoming or design flaw in this dryer?

    May be related to how the auto-dry algorithms are programmed. Moisture sensors are a simple low-voltage electric circuit ... damp clothes brush across the sensor bars, conduct electricity to complete the circuit between them, which counts as a "hit" to the control board. The board logic counts the hits which decrease to a point that it considers the load to be dry to the selected degree. There are various ways the logic can be programmed. Some add a fixed amount of time after the target hit pattern is reached, or a variable additional time calculated per how long it took to reach the target hit pattern ... which may also vary per the type of fabric cycle selected.

    (Models with a mechanical timer instead of fully-digital controls can have a moisture sensor but it works a bit differently.)

    Electronic/digital control units typically have a diagnostic function to check that the bars are registering ... enter the diagnostic routine, select that option, touch the bars with fingers or a damp cloth and the display should indicate accordingly, stop touching them and the display should change again accordingly. You might search for a service manual for your model, or locate the tech sheet that should be stashed somewhere on it which should details how to perform diagnostics.

    What doesn’t make sense is why moisture sensor would work less well at lower temperature settings.

    Shouldn’t it either work or not work regardless of which sensor dry cycle is set?

    So, I have a similar issue with my Duet dryer. The Normal cycle is designed to slightly overdry to make sure that pockets, hoods, and other dense parts of fabric are completely dry. The Casual cycle on our Duet dries at the normal dryness level will dry about 95% or so to completion. However the cycle was designed to dry lighter and more thin synthetic or cotton blend type items to completion. The Delicate cycle requires the more dry level and dries about 90%. This cycle in my opinion is set up more as a CYA type situation, where it is designed to never over dry even when set to more dry since a majority of people my age will throw all of their expensive clothes in the dryer and ruin them on the first use. However, on my machine we can change the desired 'dryness' level based upon input from the moisture sensor separate from the settings you can change (less, normal, more, etc.). I typically have this set to the 15% MORE dry setting, which makes both the Casual and Delicate cycles as mentioned above dry to completion. Though, it will make other cycles like Normal and Heavy Duty overdry quite a bit. It would be worth it to check and see if there are any settings you can adjust on your machine to accomplish this. It may be mentioned in the owner's manual. Using a timed dry cycle on whatever desired heat setting and the approximate time may help out too, although defeats the purpose of having a nice dryer with automatic moisture sensors and cycles

    One thing I will mention is that using 'extra low' heat takes an awful long time to dry certain items simply because the deeper parts of the fabric never really warm up until the end of the cycle. So a full load of jeans will likely take 1:40 to 2 hours even after a run through the spin dryer. Using the 'low' heat setting for a majority of loads will be MUCH better, more around 50 to 60 minutes for the full load of jeans.

    As a side note, I HIGHLY recommend that you deep clean your dryer. For instance, use rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball to clean the moisture sensors. Clean your lint trap with soap and water to remove any residues. Clean out your dryer vent from start to finish to ensure airflow. I typically take my dryer apart and sweep it out and wash out any residue in areas that can handle that. You will be shocked by the amount of junk that people have in their dryer and they do nothing about it. I really do not know how dryer fires are more common! Hope this is helpful, and isn't too much!

    Interesting about the Maytag Halo of Heat dryers dadoes. My Speed Queen electronic controlled dryer does a nice job on the automatic settings, though you have made me curious about the factory defaults because of the way it dries on the PP cycle setting. I dry towels, sheets etc on the Normal setting and select the Dry level on the Dryness setting. The dryer has four heat settings-air, delicate, medium and High. High is too hot for anything but the most rugged of materials. The medium level is what the machine uses for both Normal and PP. I have begun using the less dry setting on PP even though as doreycrouse points out it means some areas of the clothing may be damp. I don't like to over dry clothes I really care about, reasoning that they will air dry without mildewing as long as they are slightly damp, not wet in those areas. when I take them out of the dryer. When I let the machine complete the cycle through the Cooling part, shirts come out pretty wrinkle free. Still, the less dry setting sometimes completely dries the load and as I stated, I don't like to over dry clothes. I completely dry towels and blankets as I have a keen sense of smell and I can detect the slightest whiff of mildew on towels that were not bone dry before they were put in the cabinet/linen closet.

    I'm in the same situation. Still haven't decided what to do, hope to find here any ideas. I've ordered several customized t-shirts for the whole family, something similar to this https://www.stahls.com/heat-press-machines. And all t-shirts were destroyed after the first wash. All my cotton clothes have been destroyed by this machine! You have no clue how angry I am with this situation. If anyone has any suggestions, and can recommend a nice washing machine, please advice! The price isn't an issue, I better buy a more expensive machine, rather than changing clothes every week!!!

    Minerals in the water can make a difference in how a dryer works. If you have a very low mineral content in your water the sensor will read lower due to a lower conductivity of the water. Pure water with no minerals does not conduct electricity well at all. Extremely pur water is what is placed above a nuclear reactor to prevent radiation from escaping.

    Miele explains this in their manual. If clothes frequently come out too wet you can change a setting that alters the drying program to use a matrix based on lower electrical conductivity levels.

    At the start of each drying cycle on a current Miele T1 the dryer will run for a few minutes and attempt to sense the mineral content in the water that remains in the laundry.. It will then adjust itself to achieve the proper dryness level that the user sets for the specific program.

    In a lesser dryer this additional logic is most likely missing. So if you have very low mineral water or very hard water it may be resulting in lower electrical conductivity inside the dryer which the dryer interprets as the clothes being "dry".

    To my knowledge this process is patented and is not available in any other dryer yet.
