Enviro ice —- compost?

last modified: 6 years ago

So I just got a couple of the cooler ice packs with my insulin shipment. The enviro ice is new this time. Anyone heard of it ? Talks about it being nitrogen sourced

What is the word following "Nitrogen" on the pkg? Nitrogen (in a plant-usable form) PER SE would be good for plants that could benefit from added nitrogen. However, you must consider the product's other ingredients, both with plants in mind, and compost in mind.

I tossed it in the compost. I couldn’t find any other ingredients on their site. Thank s

Misfits Market uses Enviro Ice sometimes, and they've assured me that all of their ice packs are made with simple sugar-water and are both drain safe and compost safe.

I haven't found specific ingredients or composition for EnviroIce yet. It only says nitrogen BASED, which is fine, but anyone putting this in their garden or compost pile, which I want to do, should know what form of nitrogen (what is the nitrogen compound) and more importantly, what else is in the liquid. Does it contain other chemicals that could be detrimental to the soil, root systems, microfauna, etc.? I'm sure there is some proprietary design to the gel, but more information needs to be disclosed.

I have wondered what it does to my septic system..

Omg it's amazing! My plants absolutely LOVE it!

It can be used for many things 🤘

Heat/Ice, Garden, house plants which is what I use it for & those babies are perked right up since last year when I started using it. To the best of my knowledge it's fine for your septic as well.

I took another look for ingredients online because the original thread is a year old. Despite being experienced at finding chemical ingredients and MSDS sheets, I find nothing at any of my sources for this product.

That said, I think it's probably fine for plants because they must have tested it. Based on what I saw on the web it's probably ammonium nitrate solution, which is just nitrogen fertilizer. It would probably have to be diluted if they put enough in to actually lower the freezing point significantly. And some references said that about this or another similar product. If it has directions on the label, follow that. As far as the gel, it's usually polyethylene glycol (PEG) which is actually a food ingredient. It's also biodegradable in the environment. I've seen bags of gel directing you to pour it on the ground for disposal, and it's unlikely they'd be doing that if it was not recognized as safe.

I kinda like the idea of fertilizer water instead of something completely useless. Aside from the whole sustainability aspect of shipping chilled food by the box to your doorstep (which is another problem worth discussing, but maybe not here), it's a good way to get rid of the packs you can't reuse.

Another reader posted to another website their researched patent. The ingredients are ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate, ammonium polyphosphate. Suggested dilution is 3/4 ounce to a gallon of water.
