Custom home or tract house?

Bones if the home are the only place to really consider upgrading on tract or developer type new construction. Anything that can easily be updated later on is generally what is recommended against upgrading. The builder/developer in these types of const. charge very high margins on upgrades.

Are you planning on selling only a year or two out? If you are it might be worth the upgrades. But otherwise those upgrades may be outdated by the time you sell. Allow the buyers to figure out how they want it changed.

If this is a basic tract home then skip all upgrades.

It's not a bad idea at all to have the bathroom the builders standard. In fact, as mentioned above the builder charges are huge on any upgrades or changes. The best thing is to get as much standard as possible and do your upgrades after you purchase and close. You will have a better selection and spend less if you skip the builder upgrades. The exception to this, IMO, is for structural upgrades that would be very expensive or extremely difficult after closing.
