Kitchen countertop help

last modified: 6 years ago

Hello everyone,

I am new to home improvement and need your advice.

I have painted the cabinets white. A few cabinets have golden handles and I will finish installing them in a few days. I need your advice on the countertop Stone choice.

I thought I would install Caesarstone's Empira White for the countertops. But I wonder whether I should install two colors to make it interesting. In the picture, the island looks like beige color but it is just the lighting. Everything is painted white.

What do you think if I install white stone countertop for the island and the black stone on the rest of the kitchen (L-shape). I prefer Quartz to Granite. Since I am working with the Home Depot right now, I don't have a whole lot of choices. What do you guys think?

Home depot will do the templating soon so I have a few days to finalize the stone. The existing cast-iron sink will be replaced with a stainless single bowl sink. With the appliances, there will be some silver color.

Backsplash need to be updated but that Will be done at a later date. Too many to make! I appreciate any advice that you can offer! Serena

First change the lighting to LEDs 4000K that is what is making the cabinets look off. IMO granite is a lot better than quartz.IMO just one counter for all and that light needs to change it is too large for that island., I see no pot lights are they there and just not visible but if not then you need to change that light to at least a track light .All the backsplash there now will need to be removed and the drywall repaired too. You need to change the lighting before choosing the counter then you bring home samples to see in your space

Since you are keeping the green for now ...i might paint the island green to break up all the white...and tie in the backsplash a little better...

The light fixture will look better if you center it on the island .....the gold handles are pretty but seem the odd man out with the stainless appliances and fixtures

I might go with all white counters for more versatility for the future...

Here is example. Then add olive wood cutting board to island for warmth and interest.

I like the idea of doing all the counters white but painting the island a different color.

Wow, Thanks everyone for the input!! I love the golden hardware. But I agree. I will return those that I haven't opened and will get the black ones. Thanks for the comments on the lighting. I will have someone to center it. The templating is the day after tomorrow and I still don't know what color I should go. I haven't made a color decision that is $$$. :)

Only get black hardware if you’re getting black counters. I don’t mind the gold but do think a brushed silver might be a better choice in your kitchen. I think a white counter will look good, then maybe you can do something a little fun with the backsplash. And don’t let them install that 4” backsplash, have your new backsplash tiles go all the way to the counter.

I would not get black hardware unless you choose black counters...and black counters may add to the dark feel that has started with the darkish green features...

Notice pics with black counters have all white everywhere...NOT the case in your kitchen...white will go with anything you do in the future...

If I go all white, which one do you think is better?

    1. White Attica (blue-black vein and looks a bit more busier) vs. 2. Empira White (grey vein). I havne't seen the slabs and will not be able to (Homedepot!). Prices are very similar. Empira white might be $100 more total.

The backsplash is controlling a lot of the decisions...it might be a good idea to remove it and just paint the wall...this would allow anything you want for wall color and island color ....a much fresher lighter kitchen without the dark green dictating your decisions...

Ok. The dark green backsplash must go!

either one of the countertops can work. any other white quartz options?

here's the Empire White you posted

This is the caesarstone Empire in the gray

    caesarstone calacatta Nuvo

    And Calacatta Classique

and I think you could do black on the island. see if they carry Silestone Eternal Charcoal. With that white on the perimeter, and this on the island (or, vice versa. do the charcoal on the perimeter)

Eternal also has some white options. I actually have the Serena in my own kitchen.

You could also do a beautiful walnut butcher block for the island.

make sure you do NOT get the 4" piece up the back if you're redoing the backsplash tile.

Let me emphasize no 4” backsplash. Choose minimal veining. Very hard to get right on seam joints. It can work for island just not on peripherals. If you want modern look chose brushed nickel or chrome hardware. I would take that backsplash down tonite! Carefully score around edges with a utility knife to minimize tearing sheetrock. Carefully take small crow bar and put some pressure on tile and gradually pull it off. The more careful you are now the easier the repair to wall will be. You really are getting ahead of yourself. Templating should happen after slabs are selected so any seam points can be carefully planned out. HD installers are not going to have good information or care about how this will look in your kitchen. There might be some good crews but what fabrication will you be doing on edges! Eased edge is best look for your styling. If I were you, I would reschedule templating until you select perimeter countertop and have removed the backsplash. This will allow templating to mimic your walls which are never square. Haste makes waste.

I actually think the counters you have are nice. Would they work if you update the backsplash?

Since you will now have an all white kitchen ( with the green removed)you can have the black counters if you love them...it will be more likely that there will be pattern conflicts with the white choices...and you can have the black hardware...until you get to the new backsplash the wall can even match the cabinet white paint...the black on the island will limit your options if you want a colored island which could add to the simple design and relieve the possibility of too much white cabinetry...which makes the butcher block top on the island a good and versatile choice if you like that look...or any of the white choices will work on the island...

Thank you everybody! A lot to learn.

I removed the 4 inch backsplash and got the templating done. I am inclined to go with White Attica (Caesarstone) to avoid a bad seam problem. After removing the backsplash, Even to ignorant eyes, it looks like something must be done ASAP. :) at least I must repair the drywall (found mold right behind the faucet). What needs to be done before the installation of the quartz countertop?

that mold should be cut out, and you should find the source of the water leak. Is it something w/your plumbing, or maybe outside where water is running down somewhere and building up in the wall? check all around the sink and underneath the sink. If all is dry, check outside. you may have to open up that wall behind the sink to see more

as for install, ask them if they want a plywood base. if yes, will they do it and is the price included w/the install? sometimes it's an extra 250 or so. If not, you could do it yourself.

I'd prob remove the rest of the tile before the new countertop goes in.

Has your faucet been leaking where it sits on countertop? That could leak under faucet washer and cause your mold problem. I would definitely take rest of backsplash down and make sure you know how much of a problem you have. Hopefully, it is just simple washer leaking at faucet. That has to come off for new countertops anyway.
