Palatine orders

Well I think I got my three. Acropolis, Souer Emanuelle and Memoire. So excited!

Memoire isn’t super exciting but I’m trying to replace SugarMoon as it hates my yard (come to think of it, most Weeks roses do) Fingers crossed the fragrance is as good or I will probably be trying Sugar Moon again in the future!

What did you guys get?

April, so happy to meet you this way!! I’ve been daydreaming about visiting your garden one day since I came upon your Instagram page. My family lives in Atlanta. I bet my mom would love doing one of your flower arrangement workshops with me. Your roses are gorgeous!!! Your pictures of Summer Memories made me ordered it from Palatine this fall. What other roses do you highly recommend?

Valpo, I’m in Indianapolis but my in-laws live in Columbus OH. When we are able to make the trek there, I always like to include a visit to the Park of Roses.

Valpo, how do you tag people? 😁

I got an email from Rachel from Palatine, and she said this about the Austin rose list:

We will be sending out an email this week regarding when you can expect to get the listing (it will be after fall shipping).

I'm sure you're all aware by now that Palatine will release the list of Austin roses in mid-January, and will start taking orders the following week, giving us a week to make our choices. I love having something to look forward to after Christmas. It makes winter go faster.

Yes, just got the email a few minutes ago. It is very nice timing, isn't it! Hopefully we won't all be fighting over the same roses. LOL

Based on the daily emails and voicemails I know you are all very eager to know when we will publish the list of what we have available and when you can place your order for off- patent Austin roses.

Please know that we will communicate availability and date when we start accepting orders after fall shipping has been completed. There are a number of reasons for this and they include:

    1. Similar to last year the diversity is high and each individual cultivar has a low inventory amount. This makes it crucial for the inventory to be accurate. For this reason we want to first grade the roses for an absolutely accurate inventory.

    2. We want to be sure that we have the time to maintain the quality in customer service and after harvest rose care that you are accustomed to. We can do this best both for our current fall orders and these additions once the November shipments are completed.

For this reason we are hoping to make the listing available mid- January 2021 and the ordering will commence a week after, allowing you all week to research and consider which ones you would want.

With our very warmest regards from all of us here at Palatine,

Guys I only got one email from Palentine. Should I be worried my order didn’t go through?

@aprilscott12 yayy!!! Glad you saw I was talking about your beautiful roses! I love following along on insta too! Looking forward to spring time and seeing how you care for your roses! 😘

Hi Deborah! Thank you! Yes, fall shipments are delayed. Because of it, I’m deferring to spring shipping. Can’t tell what the weather would be like here in December. It is typically not frozen in November or December but who knows what kind of winter we will have.

I got the email and I'm wondering what to do...in Houston, the ground rarely freezes and not by Dec, but I have no experience planting in winter, should I defer to spring? What will it ship in spring ? Asking coz it gets super hot real fast...I usually have success with fall planting and not spring...

I would keep fall rekha ! Especially since who knows what spring 2021 will bring 😬

For me, I will definitely keep fall. Local nurseries around here start selling the bare root roses and fruit trees on January 2. If I were to wait for a spring shipping, I don't think my rose would have time to establish good, strong roots before our rainy season dries up and then the winds and heat come... I'm just disappointed I can't use my Thanksgiving break to get the rose in the ground! But I'm glad they are looking out for us and not having our roses sit in a warehouse somewhere. Rekha -- if you don't get hard freezes in December in Houston, I'd agree with Lilyfinch. But even if you do, you could have a pot waiting for it and move your pot to a protected location, right?

I am in east Texas, 2 hours north of Houston. I am not worried about the later shipping date. I will have pots ready for the roses and soak them a few hours then plant. What I plan to do to protect the roses is have newspaper collars already made that I have stapled together [several thicknesses of papers] that I can put around the canes of the planted roses and fill with fine landscapers mulch. They will stay like this until spring. The collars will protect the canes from drying out with the cold winds - which is one of the causes of rose death. When spring comes......I will see the plant starting to leaf out and slowly start removing the collars. This is an old method I read about years ago and it works.

Thanks Lillyfinch and Deborah, I will keep the fall date! who knows if we will get a freeze...2020 has been unpredictable to say the least...we have a hurricane in the gulf cost and a cold front all the same time.

@alameda/zone 8/East Texas, your method sounds good...any particular mulch? I dont think we even get very cold winds. There is only one winter that I can recollect getting very cold in my couple of decades in Hou.

Rekha - I have heard of people using leaves - anything to insulate and keep the wind off the canes, which dries them out then that can cause plant death. I have just used this fine landscapers mix that I get at Lowes - and I topdress my pots with this. It is light, doesnt retain water, and I have also used the soil mix I get from a company in bulk which has bark fines, sand, mushroom compost. I would think any kind of fine mulch would work. Anything to insulate the canes and keep the wind off them. The landscapers fine mulch also keeps the canes moist while providing insulation. I plan to collect newspapers and make my collars in advance so will be ready when the roses arrive - have the pots ready to fill. I fold the newspapers in widths that are equal to the height of the canes. Staple them together, fit over the planted rose, burying them a bit, then fill with the mulch, and put a bit of soil around the outside of the collar to stabilize it.

I would love to hear how people's Forever Rose is doing--it's available at Freedom Gardens and there's no HMF for it at all! I had to look here instead :p

Cant help you out yet. Mine hasn't arrived yet

But from the pictures it looks gorgeous

Go for it Aaron and we can all compare notes .

Can look it up on the Palatine site. I got this Rose from Freedom Gardens late fall. It was quite small but still seems to be alive! I'll report back once the season kicks in.

My Palatine order has arrived! A lot earlier then I anticipated so low I have to run to get some pots and potting soil. The roses looks great tho. The instructions says to remove the buds that are on the plants right now and shorten all the branches. Is that something you guys do? I don’t remember doing this w the DA roses

There are no flower buds to remove from a bare root rose, so I'm slightly confused by this. Sounds more like the advice for an own-root rose. It's not uncommon to prune the canes on a bare root rose once you receive it.

I think they are referring to the new white growth that is pushing out.

I've never had new white growth on a bare root.

I just soak them and plant them. I never cut canes or anything else and have never had a problem. One thing I noticed over the years is that each seller has their own instructions, often differing from the others. I just ignore them all. Ceres, are you planting these big roses in pots then? Diane

At my local nursery, where they sell a lot of bare root roses, the staff differ greatly in their advice on whether or not to prune the canes on the bare roots, and how much, etc. The original owner, who died a couple of years ago, would seriously prune -- like SERIOUSLY. But the woman I probably trust more than anyone only prunes out any problematic looking pieces. Some would trim a bit of the root, too. Sometimes I've bought the "body bag" roses at a big store and if they had a lot of new growth I'd cut off any that was in a place I wouldn't want that as a cane but left the others...

I'm waiting for my Palatine Rose, Sweet Delight! Where oh where is it? And still waiting on my Austins...

@susan9santabarbara sorry, I meant the little sprouts coming out of the plant.

@Diane Brakefield just for now. I want to wait for my David Austin order plus I’m doing some work to the backyard, so not really sure where they will go for now. The roots looks great tho!

@DDinSB (Z10b Coastal CA) so weird you didn’t get yours yet? I was actually surprised I got mine so soon, we just had snow last week and everything was frozen. Thankfully it’s warming up this week

I got my Our Lady of Guadalupe from J&P and that was the first time that I remember getting instructions to prune the canes to 6 in.

Then I watched a Paul Zimmerman video and it said the same thing, cut the canes. I dont remember ever doing that but am going to give it a go and see if it makes a difference.

Did you get notice that your order was coming or did it just arrive ?

I think the reason for trimming canes and removing new growth is to protect the roses from desiccating. I read that after planting they need about 2 weeks to grow feeder roots and be able to absorb water. Until then, they use water that is in their canes, and active growth may use this water too quickly and weaken or even kill them. The roses I get from Palatine are always dormant and so I never trimmed the canes, but I did it with roses from Hortico that were actively growing when I received them: if the new growth was close to the top of a cane, I shortened these canes to cut it off, and if it was closer to the graft I just removed the white growth. Then I mounded them with soil. All these roses have grown very well.

@Kristine LeGault 8a pnw no notice, they just arrived... DA ships theirs later to my zone, I think only early April. So i was a little surprised to get these so early.

thank you @Magda (Ontario, USDA4/5) that makes sense! I will go ahead and remove the growth and cut the canes a little

I just got a UPS notice that my DA's are arriving tomorrow! I wish I had more notice.......they could have at least emailed me........

The DA's I wonder when the DA's will arrive to our Zone. Would it depend if it is bare root grafted versus bare-root own root?

In the past the ones I received from Palentine I did remove the buds but I don’t remember trimming the branches? I probably did because I usually am a stickler for following directions haha!

I’m with Diane. I just soak them in water at least 24 hours and then plant. I like to mix in some worm castings in the planting hole and add some beneficial microbes too. Then I water every day for a couple weeks and don’t let soil get dry at all for a couple months. Mine from Regan Quicksilver and Boscobel and directions that I was sent.

Thank you @Stephanie, 9b inland SoCal for posting this. I removed the big sprouts. That makes sense to cut the canes. I’m always learning with you guys! I guess that the DAs arrived pretty short, which is why they didn’t ask to cut them!
