Two story great room furniture layout

I was hoping someone could help me decorate this great room. We recently moved into this brand new house from a very old home with formal rooms. Looking to get new furniture....but need help deciding the best way to lay out furniture. Do, I put tv above fireplace with two sofas, get a sectional and a big entertainment unit for the huge wall. I have no idea where to begin.

I agree with denise1953 completely. I too feel that a TV mounted on a FP is too high for comfortable viewing. I also agree that a sectional would be perfect for your new space. I'm partial to Pottery Barn slipcovered sofas myself, but that is a personal choice. I think your TV would look best in a fairly substantial wall unit. You have a lot of vertical space to fill up, plus you will need to balance the heft of both the FP and the sectional.

Another option would be to place 2 sofas (slipcovered?) at right angles to each other with a 30" round table in between them. If this room is acting as both your formal LR and your FR, this would be a more stylish option. Plus, if you move or your needs change down the road, you can split up the sofas into different rooms, etc. also, whether you choose the sectional or 2 sofas, you should place a coordinating arm chair in the opposite corner to the right of the FP to round out the seating.

Thanks for the comments! Starting my sectional search....it has to be leather which I don't love but since we have a black lab and two preschoolers it is a must!

Try a long credenza below the TV and hang it on the wall above. Keep the sofa as light as possible - huge, hulking dark leather sofas are one of the biggest dilemmas on Houzz. Try a pair of swivel chairs for accent and flexibility. They can sit on the same side of the space as the TV but will turn for viewing or for conversation with those on the sectional.

You have a very nice space to work with. I would definitely change out the chandelier for something else.. Like your leather chair and ottoman, I guess you could put the TV over the fireplace if you must have it in this room. You could also engage a cabinetmaker to custom design a wall cabinet/entertainment center.

I agree, you need a sectional or two sofas. keep them streamlined, not bulky. And change the chandelier out, the room is great. I also agree you need a long cabinet under the wall mounted television. Make sure to get a good sized television, not too small. Not over the fireplace. And if you can afford to, you could have a cabinet maker design a wall unit like sustainable dwellings suggested, it would be wonderful, but I know not all people can afford to do that sort of thing when first moving in. If you get a nice cabinet, you can relocate it later on somewhere else if you are careful about the style and it is not a standard television cabinet style.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I really like swivel chairs in front of the low credenza. I just worry it isn't going to be substantial enough for that huge wall. I was thinking of buying the hooker piece in photo attached, or having one custom made. It is too much? I really don't want to do any built ins. This is our third house in 5 years and I have left behind so much built in furniture. Knowing that we are going to move again, I would like to try to get stuff we can take with us. Just curious why the chandelier has to go? My husband picked that out, I don't mind it, don't love it but just curious what doesn't work about it. Thanks,

I actually liked the chandelier. I thought it was kind of unique - not too cookie cutter. And it fills in a lot of dead space. Perhaps the other person felt it wasn't big enough for the space - I can't tell from the pics. I like the Hooker piece you are considering because I still feel a vertical piece is needed on that wall. If you tend to move a lot, maybe 2 sofas is a better choice than a sectional because sectionals are huge and don't work in every space. Also, since the Hooker wall unit is black, maybe you should look at brown for the sofas. You will need some light, modern pillows for your sofa/sectional to offset all the masculinity in the room.

I think the entertainment center will work great in your room...gives the mass you need. Also like the swivel chairs idea. I have two swivels chairs in my family room and it works really well when we need more seating. I still like the sectional better than two sofas just because I think it is more conducive for a family to watch tv. Children like to cuddle with their parents when watching tv together and the corner section is great for that! It's hard to see the chandelier, but I like the idea of one in a volume room.

Thanks for the help, I think I have the layout figured out. Can anyone provide pictures of the type sectional I should look for? I am always drawn to the rolled arm couch, but based on the comments it would be too bulky -especially with a piece like the big hooker entertainment unit.

I like the Pearce sectional from Pottery Barn. It is a nice mix of modern and trad with the rolled arms and chunky legs.

Easy peesy! Sofa facing fireplace, two club/recliner chairs facing tv (tv stays where it is) that way you have easy access to dining area and two recliners facing tv. Next put two storage type ottomans side by side in front of tv. Won't block view but adds additional seating for parties, also great storage for blankets and toys. The fireplace is lovely and I would hang a lovely large piece of art with some type of landscape that you love. Now you have someone laying on sofa facing tv, two recliners facing TV for game and moveable ottomans for extra seating. Keep your large coffee table. It works great. Anchor seating with rug and hand ceiling to floor drape panel (one per window don't need two panels each) on windows over fireplace - semi shear to have view but less glare on tv
