It really depends on the rest of your home and whether your kitchen is connected to other rooms in the house.

Tiles are better for water resistance, but if you drop any glass on tiles it will most likely to break.

Have had both and highly recommend hardwood over tiles. The grout between the tiles is always dirty and is very hard to maintain (even if you use a grey grout). Hardwood cleans up easily and if you put a good finish on it (Bona or Streetside or Streetshoe--can't remember exact name) it will last for 10 to 15 years.

Wood floors in kitchens are gaining popularity. Although I would normally recommend tile in a wet area such as a kitchen, I have installed many wood floors in kitchens and the floors have held up very well. So, it is really a design question over a wearability question

We remodeled our kitchen four years ago. A family friend suggested tile because her dishwasher had overflowed and damaged their wood floor. Instead we opted for wood floors, the wood is more comfortable for standing, and cleans well. We put tile in the adjoining laundry room.

We ripped out the tile in our kitchen this spring and put down hardwoods. I am in love with them! They are beautiful, easier to stand on, and look so much cleaner than the nasty grout we had before. If you have hardwoods throughout the rest of your house, I highly recommend hardwoods. Here is a photo (I am NOT a photographer -- no judgement please)

Both have their pluses and minuses. I like tiles in kitchens because if you ever have a dishwasher leak or other pipe leaks - it's a lot easier to maintain. I always lay my tiles on a diagonal or create a design with the floor tile to provide visual interest. I ask my installers to use very small grout lines and typically select a grey or dark beige grout that won't get filthy. But II've also done hardwood and it's fine. Just really a design choice and also how it flows with your house.

I put tile in my kitchen about 5 years ago, and really wish that I had not. The grout is so hard to get clean and it never stays clean. Keep in mind, if you call in a pro to get the grout clean, it will probably run you .50 per sq ft to clean.That can really add up, depending on the size of the space. And yes, it is hard to stand on tile and can be noisy if it's a kitchen that people will hang out and chat in!

Thank you again for the comments. Simplysteph no judgement passed on the picture :) We decided to go with the hardwood as it is connected to the living room and dinning room and it will all be hardwood as well. I do agree that it would follow better.
