Window dressing dilemma

last modified: 6 years ago

We are struck on what to do with our living room windows and would appreciate any input! We like the idea of the full drapes to cover the set of three windows at the front of the house (the left side in the first picture) both to create softness in the room and to block out the view from the street at night, but when closed they dominate the space, especially with the curtains on the windows on either side of the fireplace. For the windows next to the fireplace, we need some covering for the window, preferably something that lets light filter in, but provides privacy. We keep those window coverings closed at all times since they face our neighbor‘s house. We are able and willing to change out any of the coverings. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

What about white woven wood roll up blinds for all windows ? take down sheers & wood poles from fireplace windows but leave drapes at three large windows. the mismatch of pole rods on the two walls bothers me. adding the woven woods would unify the room window treatments & they’d be a nice look on either side of fireplace & add texture to room the wovens at large window could provide the privacy you need at night by letting down & the drapes are a nice accent to soften that wall & you‘d still have option to close. I think woven wood blinds also go with the style of your home. I’d want to match the wood blind color to your Mill work / wood trim.

@KW PNW Z8 the mismatch with the rods drives us mad, too! interesting idea to install identical blinds on all windows and just keep the drapes on the larger set. I wouldn’t have thought the same color blind as the white wood trim but I’ll think about that more. Thanks for the great thoughts!

@calidesign I’ve been nervous that it would look odd having drapes w/ a rod on the left set of windows and blinds or other covering without a rod on the other — but it sounds like I’ve been overthinking. We installed the former and then got stuck on the latter. :)

I would do one panel on the smaller windows; opened to the outside. You can lower the front window to the same height as the small windows. The rod on the picture window is too wide, which is also adding to the problem.

I have different opinion than houssaon. I don’t think rod on picture window is too long. I think you have rod length placed so that drapes stack completely off window when open. And I like look of drapes hung close to ceiling. Not sure if there’s room in corner to have two rods with extended finial at ends. Also, I think you told us that you keep smaller windows covered 100% of time because otherwise you’re looking at the next door house. It looks like you already have one sheer panel on those windows. I think houssaon is after the same effect though - a unified window treatment for all windows in the room.

@houssaon Could you clarify what you mean by "opened to the outside"?

Thanks all for the great feedback. @KW PNW Z8, yes, we need privacy (but desire light) on the fireplace side, where we share a driveway. I have ordered a few wood and roman shade samples from Select Blinds that will arrive in a week or so. I think the top down/bottom up feature would work well there. Will circle back with final contenders if ya'll are interested in weighing in - and I promise final photos!

I’d love to see the result! Your question about “opened to outside” for fireplace windows - my take is that means when you open the suggested single panel, pull it open towards the corners & away from fireplace. You can do that with what’s there now but I understood you keep them closed for privacy.

You don't need to add blinds to the front windows. It's fine to have just the drapes on the front and just the blinds or shades around the fireplace.

We suggest inside mount individual bottom up top down pleated blinds or honeycomb shades. They are most versatile for privacy and light management. And they will never overwhelm your room.
