I would remove everything except the tallest one on the corner of the house.

they are conifers ... which are trees in this case.. and they never stop growing.. unless you like the annual job of shearing them ...

we talk in tree time... decades ... and i bet these have been there since just about the time the house was built .... many to many years ... also.. they were planted too close to the house without any real idea of their future potential ...

frankly.. they should go ... but hey.. you just moved in.. im sure you have plenty of work to do in the house ... and if it takes you a couple years to get to this project.. good enough ...

the one on the corner is already taller than the house.. and it should go also ...

as you drive or walk around the area... just look at similar houses... and see what strikes you ... snap a pic.. and we can get you where you want to go ...

make a 3 or 5 year plan .. and start working on it.. but do make a plan for a full redo ...

btw: the ones at the garage already are overhanging the driveway .. personally if they scratched my car.. they would be gone in minutes .. period ... and they arent going to be pretty.. if you cut them back so they dont ...

Thank you for the info! We were considering keeping the tall one but I didnt like how close it is to the house.

The house itself was actually mostly updated and remodeled so other than the hardwood flooring that is currently being installed this is our next project. We are currently getting quotes from tree removal services and will definitely plan on calling 811 before we do anything. The ones by the garage are definitely too wide. I was thinking of making them a little smaller but now I’m leaning more towards removing them all together and placing something else there.

Im completely new to gardening and have no idea what I’m doing so any suggestions will be appreciated. Trying to do as much research as I can to avoid making a decision I’ll regret. I live in a northwest suburb of Chicago

the first step would be defining beds .. in case you want to change that ...

i presume there is a walkway there.. and that little bed on the right corner of the garage and walkway will be a problem ...

with the height of your house.. you will want some verticality .... else the garden will look squat ...

you should plan ahed.. so you can maintain a 2 to 3 foot empty spac3e at the foundation for house maintenance ... to that takes some planning ahead regarding future potential of larger plants ... like planting them 5 feet away from the house.. never forget.. foundation plantings are planted to hide the foundation.. not on the foundation ... this was the base error of the previous scape ...

and you ought to consider coming straight out from the picture window... and planting a tree in the lawn ... thats where we might get some of the vertical height we need ... i presume.. like most of us.. you really dont need that lawn anyway ... a smaller potential tree ... perhaps something that flowers.. like a redbud or magnolia... again.. where are you ...

what you need to do .. is to verbalize your GOALS... like i did above.. and once you can understand your goals... well ... then actually making it happen.. is really the easy part ...

so if all you et done this fall is removal and bed prep.. good enough .. and we can plant in spring ...
