Steve, curious what you're doing with all those? I know you have to be running out of space and those aren't cold hardy enough to put outside.

Good question. I give them away to friends while keeping the best. Kumquats can,t be grafted to Seville sour orange but Poncirus Trifoliata can and kumquat can be grafted to Poncirus Trifoliata. Sour orange produces the best tasting fruit of any rootstock.

Steve, do you know this from experience? Or from what you've read or heard from others?

I've heard that navel oranges are best on sour orange, but have not heard this about any other variety. What about on their own roots (as in, rooted cuttings)? Is there a difference?

Mostly from reading. When I was a child we went through a shift of great tasting oranges to so-so oranges as we,ll as bananas. It wasn't till decades later that I learned of Tisteza and realized my youth time coincided with the triteza outbreak. That is when all the sour orange rootstock citrus trees died. The bananas, Kampala were also wiped out by disease and replaced with Cavendish. I did not read about either extinctions until I grew citrus trees.

Not quite all the sour orange root stock are gone. Sky Valley Navels grown in the San Joaquin Valley, CA, are still growing on sour orange. They are very old trees and are really good. It's the only navel orange I will buy in winter.

I agree with poncirusguy concerning Sour Orange as a rootstock. Sour Orangs has long been know for producing fruits of high internal quality. Plus trees on Sour Orange generally have good freeze tolerance. If the tree is not in a location with Tristeza, it is an excellent choice for a root stock.

4 of my grafted T-Buds as of today. My tallest one put on 31 inches of growth.
