What to plants to squeeze between/under other plants?

You know how they say "Plant this shrub spaced 36 inches apart"? I wonder if there are some particularly non-aggressive, shade-tolerant plants that you can put between and under most of those well-spaced shrubs and other plants. Is there anything that will almost never choke out other plants, that won't mind a shadowy little area?


I'm in zone 8b, but feel free to give ideas for people in other zones.
