Will my kitchen look too cold?

Hi all,

I'm finalizing the design of my kitchen, and I'm starting to worry it's going to be too cold since its all white/light gray.

Cabinets - I made a last minute decision to go with IKEA Lerhytthan light gray cabinets without seeing them in person. I had originally planned to go with the Axstad white uppers and navy blue uppers, but at the last second thought that the light gray would be more "sophisticated".

Backsplash - Cloe white subway tile

Countertop - I'm leaning towards Stellar White from MSI quartz, since I'm not a fan of the marble looks, and hate granite. It has a hint of sparkle in it.

Floors - white concrete look vinyl

So as you can see, almost all white and some light gray. I plan to have brass hardware and stainless steel appliances. I'll also definitely have a rug of some kind on the floor. This is a studio condo that I'm probably going to sell in a few years, so while my person style is way more colorful, I'm cautious to make the kitchen more neutral and then bring in color with art and rugs and whatnot. I know warmth is usually brought in with the floors, but the rest of my floors are a natural maple engineered hardwood that would not work in a kitchen. Keep in mind my kitchen is quite small as well, only about 6'x7', and there's no natural light.

Any thoughts or ideas?

It’s freezing iceberg cold. Of course natural maple would work for floors. And as butcher block counters too.

Of course maple works, but I am very averse to real wood floors in a kitchen, and I brought some laminate and vinyl samples and none matched my current floors, so it would just look weird.

Butcher block also looks nice, but I'd rather something that has no maintenance. The only butcher block counters I've been in person have been full of scratches and don't look great after a few years.

Studio condo translates to very small kitchen . Normally objectionable: the all white bordering on cold theme will translate to a cohesive look . Proceed ; it will work because the space is small. I would skip the brass hardware . Just thin diameter satin nickel handles knobs or whatever you have in mind. A little accentuation can be had w cup pulls on top drawers . Make sure that subway tile won’t look peach colored ... look over the whites of subways w care.

White is a great background, as is gray. Add color with art and accessories: yes, you can put art in a kitchen; also some wood pieces (cutting board, salad bowl, wooden spoons in a colorful ceramic pot), ceramic bowl, vase, jug or pitcher, bright hand and kitchen towels, colorful aprons and potholders, a colored glass suncatcher in the window, fresh flowers as often as possible. And I have smallish Oriental rugs in my kitchen.

First off you have to HAVE TO bring the grey samples together to see if they play nicely. Just looking at the photos it’s hard to tell and it’s a rookie mistake not to bring these elements together before you commit to either. Then, once you know they are good together then it’s ok to select the counter. Ideally wait on bs until after everything else is in. This is your last ditch chance to make it all right. Your chloe backsplash may look dingy/yellow with everything else.

That's the best thing about IKEA, I can always just return the cabinet doors and panels and go for something else. Will it be a huge pain in the ass? Yes. But also not the end of the world lol

And I'll definitely wait until more is installed to make a final decision on the countertop.

Why can't you bring a floor sample to IKEA at least and check the greys together before you buy? Really easy and saves such a hassle.

Unfortunately, my local stores (I live next to two) don’t have any lerhyttan in the stores, so I bought sight unseen. Looks like I’m canceling my order though 😂

I'm in early kitchen renovation plans, and my plan to add color is fun cabinet knobs, like https://www.etsy.com/listing/629326569/blue-glass-door-handle-kitchen-cabinet?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_b-craft_supplies_and_tools-tools_and_equipment-home_improvement_and_hardware-knobs_and_pulls&utm_custom1=k_CjwKCAjw_NX7BRA1EiwA2dpg0jD-PfVOtVqk8usUwDQ7DrzKcvTxdkwGD_S0oSJDO-wlNyndsIV9ERoCIa8QAvD_BwE_k&utm_content=go_2063077589_76452863655_367965824352_pla-296369627039_m__629326569_129434899&utm_custom2=2063077589&gclid=CjwKCAjw_NX7BRA1EiwA2dpg0jD-PfVOtVqk8usUwDQ7DrzKcvTxdkwGD_S0oSJDO-wlNyndsIV9ERoCIa8QAvD_BwE

I'm skeptical that the floor will go with the cabinets. They don't look like they go together from the photos, and as Thinkdesignlive pointed out, it's easy to go wrong matching grays sight unseen.

That’s a good idea Alia. however, I prefer to keep fun knobs for furniture pieces like a sideboard or nightstand. In the kitchen I’ll probably stick to simple brass.

Ash - if you can cancel your order that would be wise. Then, just order a sample or one box to test/bring to IKEA. This is the time to get it right. There are tons of manufacturer's that have the concrete look and all are subtly different. Good luck.

Ash Y what did you decide to do? I love the Lerhyttan light grey. It’s really neutral and beautiful. We are using it on a new island with black perimeter cabinets.

I returned the lerhyttan and got the axstad in white and navy. Light gray can be absolutely beautiful, but I decided that in the end it hust wasn’t “me”

White and navy will be beautiful! Do you have a post where I can see updates? Did you choose Cloe? I think that’s what we will be using.
