Electric wall can opener: remove or replace with something?

last modified: 6 years ago

i am currently updating my 1990s kitchen myself and have this old electric wall can opener. It still works and is hardwired. When i take the can opener off the wall, there’s a giant electrical box, about 8 inches high and 6 inches wide.

My question is do I just remove it because I’m NEVER going to use it and it’s an eye sore or is there something more high tech, cool or modern I can replace it with (tech/electrical, not decorative)? Or is this something that can be spray painted to at least make it look nicer?

if you don't use it, then remove it. (and it's rather grimy looking! )

if you're going to put in a backsplash tile, it will cover it

if you don't have plans on tiling, remove it, patch the hole, and paint

while you're at it, remove the outlets you have in the dirty looking off white,

and replace it with a white one to match the outlet cover.

do the upgraded one like this

What about something like a USB charger? Thought honestly you're probably better off just tiling over it.

Before you close it in and tile over it, make sure all the wiring is disconnected and removed.

Definitely don't throw it away. I would replace it with another outlet. Actually I would keep it just for the coolness factor.

Make sure there is no electrical going there after you remove it then just tile over it with a new backsplash and yes cange the outlets and switches. There is nothing cool about something you will never use.

It's not right for a house from 1990, but it would be nice in an older house. It's probably worth some money if you wanted to sell it.

If you don't want an outlet there, you have to completely remove the wiring, can't be covered. Fortunately, it probably gets it power from the outlet nearest it. So, you can take that one apart as well and find the right wires to remove and swap out the outlet color at the same time as Beth suggested. It's fairly easy. But if it were me, I'd just add an outlet that includes USB plugs depending on what I want to plugin there. I use my tablet for recipes while cooking, so the USB is nice on the counter.

What does your cabinetry and decor look like? If it looks like it "fits", I'd keep it....it's kinda cool in the right setting. If it looks out of place, I'd remove, disable the wriring, and patch the wall.

I am in the process of painting my cabinets white (finishing today, so excited & exhausted!) with black hardware. I'm going for a modern farmhouse vibe with eucalyptus and all that, so I don't think it fits. I like the idea of USB ports but I can't find a panel that's big enough. This opening is like 6x8 inches

You can patch the opening to fit the USB panel.

You will have to do drywall repair. For something like this it can be tricky, so it may be easier to remove a larger piece so you can attached the new outlet box to the stud, then patch the drywall.

patch it up and rewire that hole (make it smaller) for a new outlet w/the USB port.

Looks like the counter & backsplash are Corian. If so, I would hang a cutting board or a tile trivet over the hole.

You could replace it with a wall mounted tablet for streaming TV, or you could put a voice-command speaker there, e.g. Alexa or Google assistant, to play music.

Patch it and put in an uninterrupted back splash. Adding any other technology to that area is just a new dilemma in a few years when the technology changes again. The only useful thing would be a regular outlet.

I have the same problem, only my can opener is in a brick wall. I would love to remove the can opener and have a little door to cover the new "secret" hiding place Anyone have a suggestion where I might acquire a little door to fit the opening?

Have the electrical removed and close up the hole unless this is in a spot where you will need to have an outlet . No matter what that has to go.

Do you have a suggestion on what to close up the hole with? Since the opener is in a wall that is actual old chicago brick, I don't think filling the hole with new brick would match. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
