In A Brutal Summer . . .

Our temperatures have risen to the 90's every day for days -- Worse, our air quality is dreadful (something that concerns me, as I suffer from asthma). Few roses have been blooming, and those that have -- well, many of them quickly turn to potpourri. On the plant.

BUT HERE ARE A FEW THINGS THAT "SPARK JOY" . . .

"Elisabeth's China"

This is a plant I thought was dead, after a truck backed over it. Bless "Elisabeth's China" as she has sprung back and is now a good 6-ft. tall and 8-ft. across.

'Mel's Heritage' ignores the heat, and keeps on blooming.

I should add, particularly for Jackie (who also loves them) that Pink Chinas sometimes struggle a bit here, but Red Chinas are just bulletproof for me.

and, on my sun-scorched, smoky, South-facing hillside, one brave bloom from 'G. Nabonnand'

Jeri - my old red china is in full bloom right now - china roses are amazing! We have had very high temps, and so much smoke from the fire in Napa and Sonoma that a few days ago I could not even see Mt. Tamalpias, which is 3500 ft tall and not very far away. However, we got lucky yesterday and today and the sky is blue and the air is clear and in the mid 70s. Hope better air comes to you, too!

I do hope it gets better here. At 5 p.m., it's still 83 deg., and the humidity has risen to 60%. So, now, it's sticky, in addition to hot and with foul air.

I am so ready for cooler weather! And rain! Monsieur Tillier has been pumping out the blooms in our heat. One flush during the last heatwave and another flush now in this heatwave. I have also had several blooms on my G Nabonnand, that are like translucent porcelain, beautiful but they don’t last as long in the heat.

Thank you, Comtesse. Yes, Jeri named it for her dog. There is historic precedence for that. From Help Me Find References for Mischief.. A Family of Roses: "p92. Mischief a word that seems to me appropriate and enchanting without my really being able to say why. 'Mischief' came about in an amusing way. I was arranging a display of a new rose at the Summer Rose Show of the Royal National Rose Society, watched by the president of the society, Major-General R. F. B. Naylor. He said: 'Why not call that rose Mischief?' and I adopted the idea at once. It was only later that I discovered that it was the name of his dog!" From Harkness, "Roses", an Airedale!

And we so easily could have called Tika "Mischief". It would have suited her just as well as "Sunshine Girl".
