I had similar closets and just having a place to hang clothes wasn’t enough so I had a carpenter come in and add several shelves- and for me that is far much better. It gives me many options. However, another idea for you would be to have half of the closet done in shelves, that way you can hang coats and use the shelving too for other things.

Of course you can do custom closets based on exactly what you want to store. If this is a rental, though, you may want to consider items like the fabric shelves that hang from the pole.
