Probably. They are definitely sun loving plants, but they are also weeds, and will grow just about anywhere.

^^ My experience as well. This is one of those shrubs you could chop back to the ground, put a bucket over it and it would still grow and flower. A messy, weedy thing that's one primary advantage is that it will grow and flower just about anywhere. Heavy shade not much to its liking but anything less that that will not deter it.

Well, now I'm not sure if I still want to plant it if it is as weedy as you testify to.

Thanks, Ken. It is definitely invasive here too, but Kansas doesn't bother much with invasive plants species. Fish, yes. Plants, who cares, at least that seems to be the attitude in Kansas. As far as sun and shade is concerned. It does get roughly six hours of sun. Come to think of it, there is a Lambs Ears and a Black Eyed Susan in the same area with the same light conditions, and they are thriving, so I suppose a Rose of Sharon would too.

We had a Rose of Sharon in Indianapolis and now have several at our current home east of Raleigh NC. They are an asset to your lawn and garden. Mine have been in bloom for over a month, and there still are some flowers. One word of caution. They can get big. The two on the west side of our house have to be trimmed back to keep them less that 8' tall. I have had to move the paver path several times because of their spread.

As for invasive I have not notice this as s serious problems. If new plants do start from seeds the mower takes care of he problem.

There is at least one sterile variety--'Diana', with white blooms, and there may be others.
