Do what you like; it's your space. If a design at the stove area brings you joy do it, no reason to be as cookie cutter as others.

Agree w/ June, NOPE. This became popular during the whole Tuscany trend. But also agree with Skippack. Go with what you love! Or go with a design (ie herringbone) but use same tile.

I think it's very kitchen specific...one trend isn't right for every style and size kitchen. My neighbor feels that her backsplash looks naked...I agree...it's missing something (in her case...considering the other choices that were made).

I think it's not about it being a trend with a Tuscan style....I think, rather, that it's about the "trend" to have the counters the STAR of the kitchen and not the splash. With an elaborate counter, designs in the splash looks too much. If you want a design in your splash, let it be the star, not the counters.

Another consideration might be the trend toward dramatic range hoods -- if that's a central element of the design, you wouldn't want the backsplash to compete with it for attention.

You might want to create a feature behind the range, but no mini murals.

The use of tile that looks like wood is now being used for backsplashes.

It's not currently in style, no. But if it gives you joy, absolutely do it. Your house is for you not for the people who eventually might buy it.

Once in a while there is a house for which something not currently in fashion or trending is nevertheless exactly right. For example, southern California has many houses built in a Spanish colonial style, for which this kind of tile work would be perfect. It would have looked all wrong in the Cape Cod house that I used to own on the shore of Long Island Sound.

<rant>I don't agree that something no longer fashionable is verboten, nor do I think that anything and everything that could be classed as "dated" has to be removed, despite what you can read occasionally in these forums. If you think that you might want to sell within just a few years, you probably do want to look either au courant or timeless, otherwise not necessarily.

One limitation is that some designers won't want a job that they can't enter in award competitions or propose for a magazine shoot. If that's their criterion, they're probably not the right designer for me.</rant>
