An independent garden center in your area will have a suitable product. Use in accordance with label directions.

Ibuprofen will dull the itch.

Benadryl will get rid of the itch. You can get a topical or pill form. It works well.

Thanks for all suggestions. Nothing I’ve tried is working for the itch. The goat idea sounds wonderful, but when the chain link fence was put up, they must have run out of money before gates were needed. So the fence will be coming down after more important outside projects are done. It’s possible we have something else poisonous besides ivy that I’m unaware of. I bought some gloves on prime day that have rough leather cuffs up to the elbows.

Poison ivy is one of the plants I feel completely justified in using glyphosate on. If the roots aren’t killed, the plant will come back. Also, birds eat the berries and drop seeds everywhere, so I am constantly vigilant. I still wear long pants and sleeves, no matter how hot the weather gets, because the itch just isn’t worth it. Topical steroid creams, like 1% hydrocortisone, plus oral Benadryl, is the best combination to treat a reaction. If the rash is extensive, you might need oral steroids from a physician. Remove and wash any clothing used outdoors as soon as you come in, since the oils persist and will cause a reaction even weeks after the initial exposure.

Poison ivy is a menace. If you are highly allergic like me, I’d stay completely away from it, gloves or not. You might be better off hiring someone who is NOT allergic to take care of it for you.

Docmom is right: the oil in poison ivy (urishol) will remain on everything it touches. Like a hoe handle, clothes, gloves, shoes, door knob, skin, firewood, dog hair, EVERYthing until it’s washed away with a grease-cutter like Dawn dishwashing liquid. You must use a grease-cutter or you’re just smearing the oil around and will be easily reinfected.

By the way, never ever burn poison ivy. The oil can become airborne and inhaled.

Most garden centers have sprays specifically made for poison ivy. Spraying is the safe way to go, but keep after it until you can find no more. Learn to recognize even the tiny young sprouts so you can nip it in the bud.
