Baltic brown countertop should go?

I want to change cabinet color to white and subway tile back splash. Should I keep Baltic brown counter top or replace it? Thank you for advance.

this is the most frequently asked question on here about this granite!

Everyone wants to either paint the cabs, or get rid of the granite.

Let me save you the decision. YES.

You have the perfect type of cabinets for painting. You have no hardware holes to deal with, no hinges, and you have a smooth wood grain that will take prep/prime beautifully.

If you want a backsplash, you'll have to remove that 4" piece up the back. Tile looks bad on top of nice granite, but white tile on top of that baltic will look horrendous.

What's the budget, if you don't mind?

    who is doing the cabinets?

Beth, thank you so much for your advice! We will hire someone to spray paint the cabinet and do backsplash. Yes we will remove 4” piece :)

I have no idea how much cost us to replacing a counter. Hopefully it will not over10,000.

for the counter? oh no. for your kitchen, if you shop for the slab yourself, you could a decent granite for under 4K.

to paint your kitchen cabs the right way, should come in around 4-5K. (depends where you live and the average price)

Let me show you a few ideas and see what you think. i'm going to post a bunch of pics, ok?

since you have that gap above the cabs, and since you're getting them painted, it's pretty easy to have some boxes made (you cabinet guy should have someone that can do this).

you can have them built like this do where you can do longer doors, do a second door (usually w/glass) or you can leave them open.

I notice that you like to have things on top of your cabinets. if you leave them open like this (and maybe have an LED tape light hidden in there, it will light up the things you want to display)

the other option is to have the gap closed w/a thick crown piece

Next thing,,,the fridge. You really need a counter depth fridge. If you got one of those (they sit further back, almost even depth to the counter) then you may have room to do an island by removing the peninsula. Would you be interested in changing the layout?

First, let me show you the diff in fridge.

Here is your fridge. this guy sticks out a good foot!! And those cabs above it? useless!

Look at this one. it's like yours.

    Now look at the After

another one. counter depth. No protrusion!

See how nice it looks inside of the panel? (your painter guy should be able to do this too)

you see how your current fridge has those useless cabs above that you can't reach?

push your fridge back or get a new one, do a panel to enclose it, and bring the cabinet forward.

Now, if you do this, you'll have more room. This one has the cabinet, plus an open cubby that goes to the ceiling.

    The Peninsula.

    See what they did here?

the peninsula disappears, and you get a small, but longer island.

if you're able to push back the fridge, you could do an island. If that seating at the overhang isn't crucial, this would give you some extra work space. And, it may be cheaper to do the granite.

Here's a basic before and after, same layout (this one has the island) and this fridge sticks way out!, but the cabs are like yours. Painted white, new hardware, new under mount sink, gap at the top still there. The granite is a simple white granite, nothing fancy, and white backsplash tile (it's a random linear bar tile in a white stone)

(if you don't like this idea, forget it, I'll move on with more pics. in any case, you need a counter depth fridge.

I have some more before/after pics w/paint color granite and tile.

Tell me what you think so far, if you like any of those ideas.

let me know what color you like (white cabs? ) and the color countertop you'd like. and that little cab next to your fridge? how about a coffee bar, beverage bar, or do you need another pantry?

I'll come back tmrw w/a ton more pics after you give me a little info

Thank you so much I never thought about the fridge. We purchased it a year ago so we cannot switch it now. But definitely we will fix it in future. I was thinking extending cabinet. I will ask a painter about it. Thank you so much for your advice. I can plan it better now!

    I like black and white.

    Frau,

If you like the black and white, get a few samples of whites you'd like for the cab color.

You want a warmer, neutral white, rather than a cooler blue-white, because of your tile floors.

these are almost identical to yours, and this is how a neutral/warm white would look.

Try Simply White, Cloud White, or Oxford White (BM)

All three of these would look great w/your floors. Try Pale Oak on the Walls

This one is Alabaster, which is a SW compliment of BM White Dove.

before and afters of similar kitchens.

this is how a panel around your fridge would look. If you can't replace the fridge, see if there is any way the GC can push it back into the wall a few more inches. even by turning the studs, you can gain 2-3". It's worth a shot.

I like this after because of the addition of glass in a few of the uppers. You have a lot of doors. putting in glass panels in at least 2 of them will help open things up a bit.

this duo just shows you how bright the white look. Notice too what they did w/the gap. I don't like this as much as building some boxes above the cabs, but this is an option.

you may want to pick your countertop selection first, and then pick the cabinet color.

matching to your tile floor (unless you plan on changing that?) requires a warmer tone rather than blues/or yellows.

any of these would work w/the tile

Thank you so much! I found someone to fix our cabinet and countertop. We decided to have quartz. Cabinet will be white too. So we will pick warm white color.

wow! that was fast! what a diff that is going to make!! I love how the add-ons make it look so much larger!

are they going to paint a panel w/cabs that come further out for your fridge? or can they push the fridge back into the wall a few inches?

Sadly the fridge can’t push back more or cabinet won’t be come out. I will buy counter depth fridge someday! But again thank you for your advice!

I had forgotten you added on to the tops! did the painting company do that for you or was it someone else? And you got all new door fronts/drawer fronts?

curious if the cost for just the paint and new fronts and the add-ons, came in at over 10? I know my estimate w/all the modifications and new fronts were in the double digits, so I'm sure it was similar for you too. A lot of time posters on here want a cost of what something like this costs. It's cheaper than buying new cabs, I know that.

what is the tile you used?

(i need that towel hanger over the drawer!)

Beth, cabinet guys did painting too. We changed color of shelves, changed soft close hinges and 2 pull out shelves so total was 6200. If no additional, it was 5600 with side shelves but white color.
We used original door fronts and added some additional on the top.

Tiles were from floor and decor.
