HVAC / Floor Return

Hi - just moved into a house where the air return is in the floor which seems... dusty? Filter is held in the unit in crawl space but concerned abt stuff falling into it (not just dust but bigger things as well) ... are there any filters or screens or something that can go into the floor return and protect it without reducing air flow?
