I screwed up...entryway table help

last modified: 6 years ago

We’ve been looking high and low for an entryway table and I thought I found the perfect one. When I got home, I realized it’s much too narrow. In all my excitement, I failed to miss a sign that it is not refundable. Is this at all salvageable?! I’m so mad at myself!

I don't think it's too narrow at all! It will look great when you add accessories.

@tlbb You think so? What kind of accessories would you add to it? Maybe it just looks small since it's a big empty hallway.

Agree with tlbb- what else are you adding? A rug & wall art? What’s view from opposite direction standing at entry door?

@KW PNW Z8 It looks directly into the living room. Photo included. A rug and a mirror I was thinking. Maybe some flowers, art? I'm not sure yet.

Just hang a colorful piece of art 5" above it. Can be as wide as 75% of its width. A pair of candlestick to one side. Add a nice runner rug on the floor about the same width as the door.

Do you mean it’s too shallow? Is that aesthetically or a functionally? Is it deep enough to use for shoes or whatever else you’d like to store? I think it will look fine with wall art above and maybe an accessory or two. Keep it simple and uncluttered.

    @decoenthusiaste Thank you!

@flopsycat1 Yes, too shallow aesthetically. Thankfully we have a coat closet off of the garage where all the shoes go (except for in the picture! ha). Thank you for your input. :)

Art or maybe a mirror since it’s an entry way & looks like nice light coming from doorway across from console. I‘d get a wide & long runner. Figure out where you want it to start & stop. Neither start or stop should be in middle of any of doors in that hallway. Also, maybe that one small picture hanging on wall across from console should be either larger or have more art hung with it - like a gallery wall? Can’t see it well but it looks lost in its space.

@KW PNW Z8 Thank you so much! I was thinking a mirror would be nice to brighten up the hallway by reflecting the light from the office across from it. You're probably right about the picture, we moved in recently and put it there but it's kind of in an odd spot. :)

I really like it. I agree with deco's suggestion of art, candlesticks and runner. Keep the top of the console simple. Be sure to adhere to the 5 inches above and 75% width of the table for the art.

It would work when you get wall art or mirror and decor. If you still do not like it, it is good to be behind the sofa console or by the wall between windows instead of bench.

I think it’s just right. You don’t want to block the hallway very much. You just can’t put anything very wide on it.

Get a nice rug and some art of mirror to hang above it.

The benefit of a shallow console is you will be able to put a rug/runner in the space and not have 2 legs on and 2 legs off. If you had a deeper cabinet, your rug would have to be narrower which would not look as good as a wider one will. Look at Celery's rendition and with the width of the runner how wonderful that looks!

Once you select the right size mirror, wall candle sconces (battery operated w/ remote is easiest), a new chandelier for the ceiling, and runner for the floor everything will look like you planned it from the start.

Was there a reason you selected a distressed wood cabinet for the foyer? Seems like your LR is contemporary.

@BeverlyFLADeziner Thank you so much!! I'm not sure why I chose it, I just liked it. :) I've included more photos of my living room (which now has a nice throw and pillows on it). What would you have chosen? Always curious!

I don't see a problem. I like halls that have some width to them (I have a bookcase in my entry way). Art, a colorful runner (I'm a sucker for orientals), a bowl for keys, maybe a vase or pot or something to balance it out.

You have an eclectic mix of items, so the console works, but don't get too country with the mirror and accessories. Just make sure you select a mirror that is VERTICAL and fairly large. You can use those flameless pillar candles in the sconces.

what about putting a full length mirror to the right of the console? and the art above the table

Here is high fashion designers idea of wall art or mirror size that i like

I have only scanned through the responses, but it appears everyone is trying to help you make it work, however, I agree with your first instinct, that the piece is too narrow -- instead of spending a bunch more $$ to make it work and still have a piece that just isn't right, chalk it up to a mistake (hopefully not a hugely expensive one?) and move on. You will find the right piece.

There is nothing wrong with using that piece. You'd end up purchasing the very same items if the console was 18" deep. However, your choices for lighting and accessories simply have to either fit the confines of the top or be hung off the wall. No problem really.

If it was shorter you'd be in trouble, but because it has length to it - it works!

Where could I buy either of those candle sconces? Any links to the vendor?

Be sure to lag it into the wall if you keep it. Once you put things on top of it and load the interior, those are very much tip hazards when they are that narrow. in depth. Especially important to attach to the wall if you have small children in the home.
