I like the combination of black appliances with the light wood. I agree you should change the countertops and backsplash. Something that combines the colour of the wood and dark appliances would work well. If budget allows, you might want to replace the light fixture. Wrought iron might work. Not sure what is above the window. If it is dried flowers,get rid of them. Live flowers are beautiful, dried flowers are not.

I would just change to flooring first. The door handles and cabinet color seems a bit outdated as well.

The look is definitely outdated as it sits now. The cabinets are simply too orange for a modern kitchen in my opinion. I would suggest if you are going with a darker hardwood floor then do it before you finish anything else. The cabinets if you do not replace them could really use a painting and new hardware to update them. The counter tops can get expensive but you can find discounted granite/marble from leftover jobs that installers will do for a great price or even build yourself a butcher block counter top yourself from reclaimed materials (sounds harder than it actually is). This all sounds a bit expensive but the majority of the things I am listing can be done for relatively little if you are willing to put in the elbow grease and time. It just takes a bit of planning, some attention to detail and some patience.

Its also a good idea if you are changing counter tops to look into a more modern sink, you would be surprised how much it will update things and you can get them cheap places like Ikea, for $250 you can get a nice porcelain farmhouse sink. Also for the back splash you can't go wrong with something simple and timeless like subway tile, you can go to a lumber yard and they typically have tile sitting around from jobs which ordered materials and later canceled the order that they will sell from practically nothing, I personally bought a beveled white subway tile for our kitchen that normally ran at $8.35/ft for a discounted price of $0.45/ft and we love the way it came out.

I suggest changing the hardware on the cabinets to something modern, and possibly stainless. I would only paint the cabinets as a last desperate effort. Natural wood is hard to return to once painted; personally I would keep the wood look, or if you must, paint the base cabinets first and leave the upper as is. With the starkness of black, you may want to soften the look with the counter tops by going with a natural look or the black quartz that has specs of sparkle in it.
Be careful not to go with too much dark or the Goth look; kitchens, in my humble opinion should be light, bright, and cheerful. If you really want to go for the drama of a lot of black and dark colors make sure you have a lot of natural light,especially on cloudy days and if you live where winter is long. Remember to think "resale"; unless you plan on staying until death do you part, and only you have to like it.
Everyone likes something different. Go to Ikea and kitchen design stores and look at their displays to see what really sells. You might research sales volume of appliance colors - I often see black appliances on sale, and I am thinking it is because it's not a popular color.
Right now retro and vintage are popular.
My personal preference is black/white combined appliances, natural wood, light colors and tons of natural light. I like more of the Scandinavian, outdoorsy cottage look with modern efficiency.
