I don't think the size of plant itself means as much as the age it's been in the ground ( length of time )

I was cautioned about orientalis & winter wind here in N Il.

yes do it ... it also reduces sunburn ...

technically.. your plants root system.. is only as old as the date of the transplant .. so there would be a high chance of browning due to wind and/or winter sun ...

not to mention its a yellow leafed plant.. and almost all of those can burn in a midwest winter ...

make sure its keep moist but not sodden thru thxgvg ... with low temps.. it shouldnt need much if any more water.. but at least check ... down at root level ...

be careful with late water.. if you have that famous OH clay ...

btw: i killed at least 5 of these of various sizes ... so if you win.. consider yourself blessed .....

mid to late summer planting in the midwest wasnt prime... next time... hold the potted plant until at least september ... when nights get cool ... so it can recover from the onslaught of the day .... if any ...

If not found to be rootbound at planting should have rooted out well when winter stem buds were set this fall. If found to be rootbound at planting and corrections made involving cutting of roots then sprouting of new roots from cut roots ends probably not going to happen until spring bud break.
