Kitchen peninsula design

last modified: 6 years ago

We have removed the wall between the kitchen and living room. Being a support wall, it will have a post and beam so my island dream is now a peninsula. The range, sink and dishwasher will be on the opposite wall and the refrigerator will be on a wall adjoining the peninsula. I am short so the plan is to have the lower level of the bi-level peninsula at a lower work height using 30” base cabinets for me. This will work great for baking and prepping for me. The taller side will be a 12 in deep 36”in high height using upper cabinets for the base. Of course, the stove, sink side will be normal height and provide sufficient prep area for others using the kitchen. My dilemma is whether to extend the 36” height side for to provide for seating which would extend a bit into the living area. What are the drawbacks to the 30” work height other than having less room in the base cabinets? How deep would the countertop need to be on the higher side to accommodate the cabinet and seating? Any other drawbacks.

Thanks

Bonnie
