Refrigerator question?

I had a frame walk through last week and I am upset about the refrigerator placement. I wanted it to be on the same wall as the stove but they have it on another wall with the island in front of it. They had to reduce the island size to 48x42 to accomodate fridge but I already ordered a regular size fridge and I do not want counter depth fridge. Still, I will only have 35 inches from the fridge to the island. They won't move it where I wanted it because all the mechanicals are in and cabinets have been ordered. They said they can move it to the opposite of the cabinets, which removes it from in front of the island but I'm afraid it may be too far away. Where should I put it?

They can’t just arbitrarily change your agreed-upon design. Make them fix it.

Apparently, it wasn't clarified, just assumed that they were going to do this, our fault. So I need a plan B.

No matter where the fridge is located, you don't have sufficient prep space between the sink and range. NKBA recommends a minimum of 36". Would it be possible to turn the two 42" bases into a peninsula? The new fridge location would work better, with no island as a barrier between it and the sink, and the peninsula can be used for extra prep when you need to spread out.

Then if you use a full-depth fridge, you can pull the base cabinets out to match the depth of the fridge box, for deeper counters. I can't tell where the MW will be, but I'd put it near the fridge and use that counter as a snack station, to keep grazers out of the kitchen work spaces. Note--you'd have an 18" base left over.
