gray that won't read blue

We are in the middle of a remodel and looking for a gray/griege paint for our kitchen/living/dining area. Everything that looks great at the paint store looks blue on our walls; I'm thinking it's because we don't get a lot of natural light in our house. (Paint stores have very bright light, and I've noticed that most websites that show paint colors use rooms that get a TON of natural light.) We've tried SW Drift of Mist -- too light (despite its LRV of 69) and too blue; BM Halo -- too light and too green; BM Moonshine -- too dark and too blue; and BM Titanium -- perfect LRV but too blue. SW White Duck is the only thing we've tried that doesn't come off blue or purple, and it's too yellow-brown. Any ideas for a warmish gray in the LRV range of 60-70 that won't come off blue or purple? We're looking for something to bridge the gap between White Duck (yellowish beige) and Titanium (blue-toned gray).

Collingwood is from the same Hue Family location as White Duck and is darker, but also less colourful.

Balboa Mist sits between the two in terms of Value, but is closer to neutral than either White Duck or Collingwood.

If either of these turn purple then that tells us that you require the extra bump of Chroma to avoid such colours shifting purple in your space.

Looking at paint chips, Balboa Mist and Collingwood do look less blue when compared to Moonshine and Titanium, but they're even darker than Moonshine, which we know is too dark. (We have a patch of Moonshine on our walls, and it's definitely too dark at an LRV of 68.)

Do you know of anything similar to Balboa Mist or Collingwood but with a higher LRV (maybe 70-75)? Even though BM Halo and SW White Duck are not the colors we want, the LRV of 74 works well in our space.

    LRV = 73 BM CSP-365 Grandma’s China. A touch more colourful & a little nearer

    to the Yellow-Red Hue Family.

LRV = 74 SW 9584 Mortar. A touch further clockwise than Balboa Mist,

away from the Red-Yellow Hue Family.

Thanks so much for the suggestions!

We swatched Edgecomb Gray in our old house, and we definitely saw pink in it. But that was our old house. lol Might be worth a look here.

I love the Kylie M site, but her videos are shot with a ton of light--not always super helpful for seeing what a color will look like in the average person's house. ;-)

The linked post has a lot of good information about why a color looks different from its "true self" in real houses in different lighting conditions. It's still a difficult job to find a paint that works in a particular setting, but the post does give some insight into why it's so difficult.

Of the two new suggestions, Grandma’s China would potentially be the more likely to shift purpleish as it is closer to the Yellow-Red Hue Family. But that’s not inevitable as colour shift is dependent on the quality of your available light.

We probably wouldn't go for the Emerald line of Sherwin Williams paint (and that perhaps explains why I couldn't find the color Mortar in the store near me), but Sherwin Williams Crushed Ice is a definite contender. We'll check out the Benjamin Moore suggestions later in the week.

    Thanks again!

Crushed ice is a lovely near neutral, but can be susceptible to shifting blue due to it’s Yellow-Green Hue Family neighbourhood. Heron Plume is also worth a look.

Lisa Holt has a video--paint pallets from four major paint producers GRAY is so far out you can't find it for 2021. Just saying.

Hmmm--the Lisa Holt video on 2021 paint colors says "grey isn't gone--it's just shifted a little bit."

At any rate, I can't worry too much about trends--I have to work with the kitchen materials we just installed. lol
