Counting on your help

Yes, live in a log home but trying to update on a budget. Not wanting the rustic, cabin look but more of a modern, contemporary look. Any thoughts or suggestions on what I am thinking to do???

For sure start with sheet rocking some of the paneling and white washing or painting the rest. New lighting. New flooring ... the upper cabinets bother me more than the lowers think about replacing at least those. If you don’t have the budget maybe do open shelving. For Cheap counter go with cement ... it’s not an easy project because any cabin does not have a modern vibe. But I think these suggestions will refresh and bring the Cabin to more modern day

    Beth is right.

Short of moving here are a couple of things that you can do to get a feel for a modern look

    1. Modern or contemporary is minimal and clean lines. De-clutter and remove all the little items you have displayed.

    2. Change out your valance to maybe a Roman shade.

    3) Update your light fixture.

These things won't give you a modern home but may be enough of a change for you in this house.

here are some lighter kitchens. what you could do (can you guys DIY??) try and find diff doors for your cabinets w/o the arches. tons of places have older oak cabs w/the shaker style doors. find them used, or look for shaker oak doors in your size from other places. You only need uppers. you could also remove the center panel and use some type of glass.

    Then paint.

see if any of these are more modern for you (notice the glass panels in a few of these uppers)

Black countertop would be perfect w/your wood. you can find black granite like Jet mist, Virginia mist, or even a soapstone, that isn't too expensive.

Silestone Eternal Charcoal looks like soapstone but is quartz. cost is about $2300 for a slab.

I like this one or the first one w/the black countertops. Notice this 2nd pic w/the glass in the doors. at least if you tried this you could cut down on the dated arch look in the uppers. Bring in black hardware, cup pulls, some pendants, and a glazed white brick backsplash. This would be more farmhouse modern, and more applicable to your cabin.

    Would this work?

    two tone. more open shelving.

more farmhouse. glass upper doors. a type of black pattern granite.

    not super modern, but diff.

look around for used cabs. people unload them on Craigslist every day

sure does make the space lighter!

    paint this,

and you could have something like this

notice the lighting, the rug, and the window coverings. you'll to update all of those, and get the right furniture, if you want to truly modernize.

I love how this looks w/the white and the natural textures of accessories.

Hey, you asked for modern! well, here's a modern log cabin

Oh my...see that is why I'm seeking advice...contemporary is not what I was thinking! update yes 👍 We love our cozy home and it is almost paid off. Not going to paint logs. Would do something different with stain in room or on cupboards but not paint. We are very handy at DIY projects. I do have black accents...the flooring and countertops are not very old. On the lines of the first pic. Thinking of putting tile on the logs between counter and cupboards on the other wall with sink. something that would coordinate with what's behind stove.

We too have a similar cabin, though very small. We had to keep the natural pine walls, but we added a large neutral rug in the living room to tone down the knotty pine floors. We DIY repainted the pine kitchen cabinets, added new hardware and added LVP flooring in the kitchen

You might want to try replacing the backsplash and updating the hardware. Those two things might make a huge difference.

I would remove all the clutter and objects off the cabinets and repaint the upper boxes in black and then put the doors back on. Scallop gone for sure and that pine section could be painted. my folks used some gold, green, and orange stains on some of the pine walls in their home for contrast as too much wood is almost always a problem in log homes, use your own colors and create some contrast in hallways and on the doors. Replace drapes and valances with more contemporay fabric roman shades. New rug under the dining room table.
