need help updating my home

Hi there! Looking for some design help. I purchased my first home >10yrs ago with an odd layout and I have struggled to decorate and update. Attached are pics of my 1st floor. Somewhat open layout with a staircase right in the middle of the way! Looking for some ideas/guidance that will make my home seem larger, more welcoming, and updated. Pictured are my kitchen, family room, and “sitting/multipurpose” room.

This is too vague of a question . We need to know what you really want. I see a kitchen that is beyond dated , a TV too high to be even remotely viewable with out a sore neck. Too much and too big furniture in the LR. I do not think you need 2 eating spaces in such a small place . Could you post a to scale floor plan , ideally of the whole main floor , showing all windows doorways and clearly marked measurements. I suggest you use graph paper it makes it easier to do the drawing. I also need to know what kind of budget you have,

Do you mean paint and decor ideas or gut renovation ideas?

Ok- I agree. Will post scaled measurements.

For a more open, larger feeling, unifying the paint color throughout will help. It may already be done, but the pix are deceiving. Minimizing the furniture and properly scaling it to the size of the spaces will help. I think your floors look great! The stairs need serious attention, removal of carpet and a new paint job. I dislike the kitchen cabinets and matching fireplace. If completely changing those is not in the budget, at least paint the fireplace to match the trim. In the kitchen, get a shade for the door window that matches the others and get rid of all the small scatter rugs. Try a long runner that spans the range, sink and DW space. Add a matching rug at the door. All the items I see hung on your walls are too high. Center single pieces 5' above the floor or 5" above a piece of furniture. Your budget, a list of items you must keep and can get rid of would be helpful. Also, how many people occupy and use the spaces on a daily basis?

Also - what colours do you like? Can you share some inspiration pics?

Narrowing focus to kitchen since I already have plans that were done about 6 years ago when I got new cabinets. W361824B on the map is my refrigerator. To the immediate right of that is my pantry (don’t think it’s marked clearly on the drawing). I also sold my table. Looking for ideas for this counter.

Do you need a second eating area? Would you be open to painting? I think you can find another colour for your kitchen that brings the countertop and cabinets together better.

I know I definitely want a different color scheme. I want to keep my black appliances because I just don’t see a good reason to buy new ones right now. I kinda like my round table in my entry room bc it feels much more modern. I would like to land on an idea that incorporates both the room with the round table and the kitchen since it is so open. Also, I am donating the dark wood storage table in the pic below.

I see nothing but opportunity for making the whole kitchen room the whole kitchen, building it out with more counters/cabinets and including a couple counter stools. I like that you're thinking outside the box and making the space yours for how you enjoy using it, with the dining room location. You need some colorful art (all over) and a rug under the table and a chandelier over it. Install some moulding around the entry wall area between kitchen and dining.

I love your round table. I think you should put some colour fuel art behind it instead of the mirror. I think you should go lighter on the walls like close to white, but what colours are you drawn to? Or do you prefer neutrals? Here are some inspiration pics. Do you like any?
