Hawthorns and firethorns are close but how they differ is:

Habit

Crataegus: deciduous shrubs or small trees

Pyracantha: evergreen shrubs

Leaves

Crataegus: ovate to broadly elliptic, obovate or orbicular

Pyracantha: oblanceolate to narrowly elliptic or lanceolate

Fruits

Crataegus: ripe fr red, purple or black, 4-15 mm diam

Pyracantha: orange to red, 3-8 mm diam

Stamens

Crataegus: 5-24

Pyracantha: 15-20
