Flagstone Patio Edge Support

Hi - I’m looking for help with a patio issue. I’m building a dry-set flagstone patio on a compacted 6” gravel base with quarter down/stone dust for leveling. I underestimated how much leveling layer would be used and am ending up with large (3”+) drop-offs on the far end of the patio. I also foolishly already put plastic edging down prior to the leveling layer so it’s under most of the quarter down. I want to shore up the edges to prevent washout and shifting. I’m planning to grow grass up to the patio on one side and a mulch bed on the other.

  • Should I install additional edging and if so any recommendations? It would need to be thin metal to even have a chance of fitting between the current edging and stone, I assume the standard landscape bed edging isn’t strong enough for this use.

  • Would tamped topsoil up to the patio edge be enough for support? Should I tamp some crusher run (3/4 gravel with fines) as support then cover with topsoil?

Any advice would be appreciated!
