Classic or Modern

I’m down to the last two, marble herringbone or glass gray/blue. The floor is the same as the current backsplash, and it’s staying for awhile. Thoughts?

Definitely marble herringbone. Not sure if helpful, but I have the same countertops (MSI right?) and it hates cold tones - mine are bordering cream. This is basic ivory glass tiles which almost match in some lighting.

the left one but A larger tile would be better than mosaics......same color shades. Agree w Mitchell re tones as his depicts so well.

Asking because I really don’t know - is the backsplash supposed to match the countertops then?

I would say for most houses it makes sense for them to coordinate, they don’t need to match exactly. I actually wanted a pure white subway tile but it just made the countertop look dingy, so I had to choose ivory.

Agree with @MarylandHomebody. Backsplash should coordinate with countertop, but not necessarily match. So if your countertop has warmer tones in it, your splash should, too. Try pulling a color out of your countertop and try to find that in a splash.

ETA: it looks like your countertop has some taupe-y / brown spots in it, I’d try to find something like that in a larger scale tile than what you’ve been choosing. It will help marry your counter to your floor. If your countertop does NOT have these taupe colors that my monitor is showing me, then just try to find a splash in a color that your countertop has. Hope this all made sense.

I think we’re all concerned with the back splashes shown as they’re cold/blue whites, and you might want to go warmer considering countertops. I saw on your profile you love the clean white kitchen look, I think you can still get there with a large scale creamy marble tile like attached.

Maria Killam is a great resource on this: https://mariakillam.com/creamsubwaytile/

Sorry, I know you were down to two choices, but here’s a few more.

You don’t have a modern kitchen, it is traditional. I am nota fan of any of your choices.

I do like what Mitchell did but he has dark cabinets. So totally different than your scenario.

I can see a simple ceramic tile, one color, a nice blue perhaps, since there is blue in there.

Although I like the idea of taupe as Megs mentions, it might clash with the floor tile color.

For me glass is for a contemporary kitchen. Also, there can be issues with installing it.

Can you change the hardware first? I think that needs to be updated and it’s an easy fix. Then we’ll pick a splash

The countertop has a mix of beige, light taupe and pale grey. The house interior is grey with white trim. I’d like to find a neutral grey subway that can be laid out in a herringbone, I don’t like straight horizontals. Agree this grey is too cold tho.

I don't think the blue glass works, so of the two, I'd go with the herringbone. But I think there's probably a better option out there for you than either of these.

I stand corrected. A light gray could work.

I like the fish scale tile sitting on the counter - is it a possible?

The fish scale was definitely a “No” mjlb , thanks tho.
