Recommendations on flooring.

We are building a new home with limited selections in flooring and feel that we may have made a mistake in the flooring we chose. We chose laminate flooring by Sand Dune by Mohawk (neutral light brown color) that will be on the 1st floor and 2nd floor landing. The stair case is hardwood stairs stained a dark brown color- stained stormy. We are unable to change the color of stain on the stair case. I'm afraid the stairs case and the flooring will be too much of a contrast.

Should we keep the neutral floors or try to change it to the darker brown floors to better match the staircase. Last picture is a picture similar to what our kitchen/first floor will look like.

Walls color: repose grey

Mohawk Sand Dune to the left; the darker flooring to the right (not the greatest pictures)

Should we see if we can change it to the dark color? Or leave the sand- dune neutral that we picked to the right?

Similar style of our kitchen; will have white perimeter cabinets with black hardware, grey island; this would be the flooring if we went with the dark brown optio

Dark floors are a constant challenge to keep looking clean. Because every spec shows you will have a floor needing to be swept within a short time after you finish cleaning it.

We actually prefer the lighter/neutral floors better, just worried about the stark contrast between the flooring and stair case.

What kind of wood is the stairway? Why can’t it be restained to try to match the flooring you picked?

Not sure of the “kind of wood”; it’s a new build with limited options to pick the interior design. There is only 1 option to do a wooden stair case with the dark wood stain as show in the picture; they will not change the color of the stain.

Anything can be changed at a price. Or you can make a light staircase that matches your flooring choice with a requirement of sample approval before installation a written clause in your contract. Your money is the fuel for the construction. But you have to be professional and timely about approval so you don't hold up construction. Some flooring like Modin by Fooret offer matching stair components. Here. Your builder may agree to this supplier to avoid the problem of matching the wood stairs to the vinyl plank. . . .You also have the option of painting the stairs and using a runner.

It is unfortunately NOT an option. The only option would be to change it after closing- which would be near impossible.

Well if that is the case and you are not willing to do this later then go dark floors everywhere IMO the light flooring next to the stairs looks exactly like what it is you couldn’t find a match, IMO stairs and main floor flooring need to be the same . Sorry wall color last choice and so IMO that will probably need to changed too. IMO you would be better off to take a discount and do the floors in vinyl plank all over to match if that could be an option.

Hi did you ever install the sand dune? I would love to see a picture of it laid out if possible.

    Thank you.

I would love to see some photos of sand dune installed too please!

@Anita Y I wouldn’t worry too much. We pulled an antique staircase out of our old farmhouse and the staircase contrasts with our lighter flooring. I might go for a flooring just a shade darker but I wouldnt match the staircase. The contrast looks fine Imo

Here are some pictures of ours. I plan to do a lighter LVP in our basement someday. What everyone above said is true. The dark flooring shows everything so I wouldn’t go really dark just a touch darker! Our door trim is also dark, we have a lot of dark antique furniture and out kitchen cabinets are cherrywood too so the dark wood is what we love! Good luck and be sure to post what you went with.

my husband and I had the same problem when we were deciding on house plans. the stairs had to be hardwood but we were going to do laminate planks on the main level. we couldn't get the same color for the hardwood and the laminate, so we decided to do hardwood everywhere. I dont know if that's an option for you though. I would probably go with the lighter option and get a stair rug to cover up the stairs. just my option though! I hope you end up liking whatever choice you decide to go with

Did you end up installing the Revwood Sand Dune? If so, can you share a picture?

I’m also looking for pictures of the sand dune, if anyone has one!
