What size dining table?

Hello,

We have a very narrow dining room 10’7 by 17 and think we should go with a narrow table (38-40inch). I’m concerned 38 will be too narrow for hosting dinners (dishes in middle of table). Can anyone provide some insight? Attached is floor plan. We are having a built in dry bar which is 4 feet. So do I actually use 10’7 by 13 as my dimensions?

I would do a 42” width table with extensions to add length when you need it I hope the drybar is the height of a buffet so 30” it will then serve as a buffet all the time I would not have it 4’ deep and where are you putting it ? IMO you have no room for this in the space . it should not go infront of the windows or blocking the walkway from the kitchen. Plan on the kitchen island being the bar and get an amazing extra long dining table with a fabulous chandelier in fact I would do 2

I was doing a built in extension from kitchen into dining room. It’s 4ft by 24. No roon for wine fridge in kitchen and we really wanted it. Will have a prep sink in island. What size dining room? We previously had a 42 inch table and it felt tight. Do you think 38 is too narrow?

Have 8 gray chairs already so want to try to keep them. Was thinking of getting 2 colored chairs on end and using wainscotting and grasscloth on walls.

Our dining table is 38" wide in a room that's 9.5' wide. When people are seated, it's a little bit tight getting around them, but not awful. I'd love to have an extra foot of width in the room, though. If I had a choice between more space around the table vs. a wider table, the wider table would lose. To be fair, we seldom host the types of dinners with lots of serving dishes on the table.

    From my design book:

Armless Chair - distance (from edge of table):

    • 20" chair projection
    • 32" arising and departing
    • 36" edging past chair
    • 44" walking behind chair

    Arm Chair - distance:

    • 22" chair projection
    • 34" arising and departing
    • 38" edging past chair
    • 46" walking behind chair

Example: 10'-7" - 44" - 44" = 39" max table width if people can walk behind seated diners in armless chairs on both sides of table

Thank you! Can a 39 inch table have platters in middle of table?

Also, What length would you do?

The minte tha drybar goes into the space you will have visually made the DR too narrow . I sse your style a bit more now but I have to say I think the symmetry of the space will be blown and I think with a bit of imagination a wine fridge could work in the kitchen. Move the range down add a wine fridge where you have the pantry and still have space for the fridge and the pantry.

So could I just make the dining room start after the dry bar? Then it would be more like 13 by 10’ 7? Or I could do a single cabinet with fridge and cabinets above? Really like having the built in there.

"Also, What length would you do?"

You can just use the chair data (type and number of chairs, and the length of the room less obstructions) to calculate as shown in example.

This is kitchen layout (not sold on all the glass) but our island comes close to dining room anyways I would want a gap between island and start of dining table anyways. You still think no cabinet in dining? What about a single?

Wonder if I could do one cabinet in one corner and the other in the other corner of dining? For symmetry?

Also, the dining room is not set in stone - I could potentially make it 2 feet smaller and put the single wine fridge cabinet on kitchen side of wall.

I don't get it. Let's say you bought the longest-possible dining room table (17' x 12 - 44" - 44" = 116" ~= 10'. Assuming that the island is the serving location, the person sitting furthest from the kitchen would have to walk about ( 8' x 12 + 44" + 10' x 12 = 260" ) ~= 22' to reach the food. Shouldn't there be a serving location closer by, maybe the countertop with that glass cabinet on top that's to the far right of the refrigerator? Or maybe you have a maid so the distance doesn't matter.
