I think it's a great idea. Are you in an area that freezes? The cinder blocks may break up in freeze/thaw. The local codes may say you just built a swimming pool, and insist on a fence (not a bad idea). You'll need something to keep it from becoming a stagnant pool. Look up "natural swimming pools".

You’ll need a liner and a filtration system. And power. The liner can’t rub against block, so they had to be addressed. Contact a local pool company to discuss logistics.

Thank you Celadon, thats a good point that everything should be setup and correct before adding water. A friends suggested that I remove the compromised sections of foundation and retain and backfill the good sections. Then he says I should mesh and Hydraulic Cement everything.
