Throw Pillow Lending Library

I think this should be a thing, don't you?

I own several hundred thousand throw pillows, by DH's account. But one tires of them easily, and they are very faddish. I have cheap Etsy pillows i still love, and absurdly dear Lillian August ones I regret. And everything in between. Because my house(s) are casual, I tend to go for Anthro, ABC Carpet, Robshaw, Anne Selke, Ballard.

I find HomeGoods very hit or miss on pillows, and right now everything there (eye roll) Holiday.

I don't want to go to Etsy or anyplace that will require staffing to sort through the offerings. I want something more .... curated?

Where are your fave spots to look?

I was surprised by how much I liked the super-cheap pillows I just bought at Society6. Colors looked just as they did online, too. The only downside is they are a little thin, but I could probably remedy that by changing the insert. I would only use them in a casual room though.

One of my activities is searching online for throw pillows, and I had not seen Society6 before. So, thanks @sas for adding to my repertoire. Will spend some more time looking....

    Michaelian Home and Pottery Barn

    editing to add that

even typing out Michaelian Home has me going there and browsing and already I'm being lured in. I've loved that store for years.

Over the years, a lot of my pillows and pillow covers have come from Etsy, Pottery Barn and HomeGoods. Some I have found in small boutique stores and tapestry covers I have collected on trips to Europe. I have a beloved long skinny embroidered pillow I put on a loveseat in my kitchen area during the holidays that I bought from Pierre Deux before it went defunct that reads Joyeux Noel. I have another long skinny tapestry pillow on the back of my sofa I bought from Gumps. (They still sell online). I switch out pillow covers seasonally in some rooms. The covers store easily. I don't have many that are permanently filled.

I just looked around my living space and realized every pillow in view came from Etsy. I have a few others that were custom made and I’ve done that only because I have a friend who sews (it’s her business so I do pay her) and she’s great and easily accessible. But generally I have no problem finding whatever I want on Etsy.

I have several old pillow covers from pottery barn, but don’t find many now. i, too, swap out covers. Sueb20, I have found two seamstresses through Etsy that do custom work. ive had pillow covers, bedskirt snd shower curtains made! I’ve used their fabric and also sent them fabric.

I, too, have pillows from a range of sources from Home Goods (mostly outdoor), Pottery Barn, RH, boutiques and Etsy. My favorites are probably the pillow covers I have made from designer fabrics on Etsy. Other sources I like are block print pillow covers from this little shop which are made to fit standard IKEA inserts: https://jshhomeessentials.com/collections/textiles

I have also purchased from OKA and found the quality to be very good.

@Bumblebeez I live about 4 miles from Michaelian Home and was just there 2 weeks ago looking at hooked rugs! Walked out with planters instead. Their website doesn't do justice to the hooked rugs, especially the artisan offerings in felted wool. They don't even show much on the website.

I must have missed the throw pillow gene. I do have a few and think they have a lot of potential value added - if you know what you're doing with them. Apparently I do not.

I have throw pillows because I think one is required to have throw pillows (jk), but I don’t know what to do with them when I sit down. In my own home, I only have 2, one at each end of the sofa. When I sit down, I throw the pillow to the other end of the sofa or I throw it on the floor (is that where the name came from?).

I have one very short friend who uses throw pillows at her back to keep her feet from sticking out in front of her. What do you do when you are a guest and encounter a chair or sofa full of pillows?

I was watching a decorator/stager on YouTube the other day. She was touting the velvet pillows from Ikea.

    besides Etsy? and Anthro?

    --Amara.

-FinnStyle (for whoever likes Scandinavian designers).

-One Kinds Lane might be worth checking into(too many to browse though)

-eBay (if I'm tracking down something particular)

PS my guests usually like throw pillows and throws. I try not to have too many though which is hard because that's my weak point. They shouldn't be in way of one's sitting. They should be used.

And I get attached to them too. So it's hard to bring one-take one out. If I really like something-the chance is very big I will continue to like it for years. I do make mistakes sometimes when in a hurry (by mistake mean-I won't like it for years. It will work and all, I'll just get bored), but seldom.

I’ve purchased from the Danielle Oakey Shop. She carries a small line and puts together pillow combos.

You can email her a picture of your space and she will send you combo suggestions, or send you photos of what pillows you would like to see together.

The problem with some of these sources is they have too many choices. Same reason I'd rather look at Farrow and Ball paint than Ben Moore. I guess I feel like I need inspiration ... ie I don't know what I am looking for.

I have a huge L-shaped white cotton duck sofa, wide plank pine floors, a dark leather ottoman and chair, a 10' long greyish work bench. Walls are Pointing by FnB. I took up the rug I had there, and the stager said she didn't think I needed one so I may not buy one. So a totally blank slate.

I have these , and some solids, in my cart (thx for the PB suggestion). I like them but they don't send me. I don't want to spend a ton ... like $150 each or less. Pillows are too fragile and trendy for investment. I fell in love with a hand beaded pillow for $850 ... 10yrs later it is faded and out of date IMHO. I probably need 6 pillows for an L that seats 8?

Marti, I think those pillows are so pretty, they look great on your sofa and those are my fave so far. What size inserts are in them, do you know?

Mtnrdredux I have two of those Dara lumbar pillows and they are an incredibly soft and comfortable velvet. I ordered mine from Pottery Barn. They adapt well to either seating area in our main living space and the pattern won’t date because it’s not really a defined pattern.

Bumblebeez when the world is approaching normal again we'll have to plan a meet. Have you ever been to Cottage Grove Vintage in G'ville? One of my favorite haunts - and actually now that I think about it they have pillow vendors. I follow them on Insta and have purchased after seeing things in their stories but it's more fun to scour the store. Material Things (in Aiken) is another source for gorgeous pillows.

KSWL, To me, the vibe of he pillows is persian carpet fragments, kind of in the vein of distressed rugs. I like them, and they may have a longer shelf life since they are a riff on a "timeless" element.

I am sitting in the room in question though, and noting that the pillows i have here are very much oversized. I don't have a tape handy but will have to take some pics.

Thank you all - so many great new sources! I will be back.

bbstx, I just picked up a velvet pillow cover from Ikea. It was the color that grabbed me. 20 X 20 for $7.99.! There is also a lumbar size available and about 5 different colors. I love switching pillows out for a quick change up. This is my holiday/winter look in my adult DS's room. I made the red and white ski sweater flannel pillows in the background.

I've been happy with the inserts from PB too. The main thing with PB is that their highly desirable pillows and or colors often sell out fast. I get a catalog, want to order a pillow, and it's gone.

However, I bought this a few months ago and love it and it's a great price right now.

I look here, there, and everywhere for such things, and this thread made me realize I "needed" one more pillow to go with my cowhide pair on the living room sofa. Found this one (new) on Poshmark for $17 including shipping. Colors are perfect.

Watch out for anything on PB priced at x.99; that is nonreturnable.

Mtn honest to god I have that pillow saved in my phone! These, too. Not to put all in one room! Just the ones I happened to like.

But here’s why I have a hard time spending much on pillows. This is what one of my best pillows looks like at this moment — left this way by DH last night.

I have 2 of this pillow in a gray colorway. The woman who cleans for me and I silently disagree on its orientation. I put the pillow on the sofa one way; she turns them upside down; I turn them back right side up. Then I saw this IG photo. Guess who’s been doing it “right” all along!?!? Not me! 😂

We’ve been traveling in our in fifth wheel RV for the past 5 weeks. First long trip (we just got back home here yesterday). I found these 4 throw pillow covers for our “living room’s” sofa and two easy chairs. Via Amazon. I think they work perfectly in there:

And these I also found on Amazon for our RVs bedroom. Darn it. I forgot to take a pic of the room with the bed actually made up with my new light turquoise mattlasse comforter and the pillows!

This is what I was talking about. Where does one sit on that sofa? The only sliver of space that is un-pillowed is also the space between the cushions.

Looks good, Lynn! The whole set up looks like a lovely way to get out of the house, see nature, and be safe.

Lynn - I love your four "scenic" pillows! They do seem to be perfect for RV-ers based in the West! However, they would also be splendid in my den. So I am going to mosey on over to amazon..... Hope your trip was good!

Hi Lynn, how was your trip? Pillows are perfect for there.

BBstx, i know exactly what you mean. Our sectional is particularly deep and large. But from what i read, they say 3 pillows in the corner and 2 at each end. Might be overkill!

Here is a pic. (rug is gone). Throws are used elsewhere.

Zalco, gorgeous site. With $550 pillows. Apparently I am not the only lunatic. But not this time! Surely there is a happy medium between that and HomeGoods.

BTW, the velvet ones from Ikea look really nice! I wish they were bigger.

Honestly, it is so easy to make pillows. i just look for inspiration, then make my own. I made two of these, which are EXACTLY like one I found with a very hefty price tag. I even located on Etsy the very small manufacturer of the trim. If I make the pillow, I can justify using higher end fabrics, I also don’t like that many of the Etsy sellers only use the pretty fabric on one side and charge more to place the pattern so two pillows match. You can pick up a sewing machine for $100.

Thought I’d posted this once: Mtn, believe the inserts are 20” and need to be 24“. fun seeing all these pretty pillows. Lynn, yours are perfect for your location...very nice. And yes, we need to hear all your adventutes.

You could easily source some very nice fabric (Schumacher, Scalamandre, Pierre Frey, etc) and drop ship them to a workroom. You have the taste and style to do it. Easy to keep under 150 per pillow, for basic shapes where the fabric is the star.

My latest pillows have come from WIlliams Sonoma Home -- really nice quality. However, their current design selection is very limited.

Those are yummy, Sue. But not returnable! I need to be able to play with colors, sizes and quantity of pillows IRL.

I agree with Arapaho and Gooster, WS has very nice options, Love those "equestrian" ones, but they also are not returnable.

Good job Dee! I agree with sewing and fabrics, etc. Which is why I have two seamstresses I use for pillows LOL. Actually, I have made a few (plain) ones myself. But I love a corded trim and other items that I am not good at. I hate pillows that are one sided!!! You can have lovely, custom pillows by sewing. There is so much beautiful fabric out there!!

The WS Home ones are very nice quality, with a heavier weight of fabric used, even in the linen. The clearance ones that are final sale may be in their outlets for viewing, or at your local store.

I just stumbled across this site in another search and I thought of this thread... has anyone had any experience with them? Very basic construction, no piping or fringe options, but the size and fabric range is good, and you can order swatches, similar to Ballard.

Although I have 2, I do not like the look of pillows without welting, cording, or a self-flange. I know it is the style, but they look unfinished.

i tend to agree, which is why brushing up my 7th grade Home economics "skills" is not a good idea. : )
