Build patio over ground stump?

last modified: 5 years ago

We removed a dying Modesto Ash tree earlier this year. The tree was rather large (4' diameter). The contractor ground the stump and filled it with mulch. Given the tree's size, I imagine there are still a large portion of roots under ground. There are lots of surface roots, too.

I wish to convert that area to patio, is it possible? I heard that tree roots takes 10 years to decay, so pour concrete or install paver over the ground stump sounds problematic in the future. Not to mention we are in North California, termites are already a problem in my neighborhood.

What can we do to solve this issue? I wish we can have a backhoe to remove the roots, but the yard entrance is rather small, bobcat can fit in but probably not a backhoe.
