Ceiling color versus wall color.

Years ago I was told to paint the ceilings a ceiling gray, it would make the disappear. In Good Housekeeping this month they said to paint the ceilings the same color as the walls, it would make the room look bigger. At Home Depot the paint woman said to go one shade lighter for the ceiling as all one color would be like living in a box. Any suggestions?

In most cases I would dilute the wall color 75% for the ceiling.

I've done a ceiling at 75% of the color (25% reduction) and in bright light it does look a little bit lighter. In darker areas the same color looks darker. I think 50- 75% is most popular

My most recently painted rooms have the same color on the ceiling as well as the walls. So much easier to paint. Rooms painted earlier have an either stone or cream color on ceilings. Not one for white ceilings as was once the norm. But my daughter-in-law insists on painting ceilings a flat, chalky white. We all have different opinions on these things. :)
