A box spring has no effect on comfot but as we age sometimes a higher bed is easier to navigate. You can do that with a box spring or get a frame where the matress sits higher. I am 74 and have never owned a box spring but always a good mattress and a frame made to be used with no box spring. In Europe hardly anyone uses a box spring since they are impossible to get up stairs usually so platform beds are the usual .IMO a box spring is just a way to get you to pay a ridiculous amount of money for a wood box filled with springs that actually never touch your mattress since there are pieces of wood across the springs too.

As long as the bed is good quality with the right amount of slats for support, it is just as good as a box spring, and saves you money!

What's the difference between a panel.bed and a platform bed?

I used to have a platform bed that did not need a box spring and I loved it as I love firm beds. I now have a box spring and a mattress since I bought a natural latex bed and I only have a bed frame for it and a headboard and my bed is very comfortable. Depending on your height the size of the bedding should be considered.
