Should patina on copper be cleaned?

if a copper awning has patina, should an HOA require it be cleaned or is this acceptable just Left alone?

Most people let their copper in that location age naturally. I think it would be foolish for an HOA to require a homeowner to ‘restore it’.

The patina is one of the reasons people select copper.

It should NOT be cleaned. Asking you to clean it would be like asking to have the weathered cedar of a beach cottage sanded to look new!

The patina is what is protecting the copper beneath.

Leave the patina alone. Would the HOA demand that the Statue of Liberty be cleaned?

I would not want to have the patina removed - but if required by the HOA you might not have a choice in the matter.

I bet the HOAs ban patina rods too.

thank you all. Very helpful. it should be left to the owner to decide. Our HOA is doing standards and needed opinion if the patina is graceful in their aged condition or a maintenance problem. ( the statues on Michigan Ave in Chicago used to be restored every 10 years or so)
