Start the shape with a forstner bit or a router and then finish the cuts with a coping saw or a chisel.

Festool rail saw.

One might assume that someone just starting out wouldn't have purchased Festool tools. And since their table saw may not be set up using a dado set might not be an option either. For a small cut I can finish with a coping saw just as quickly as setting up other methods.

Thanks all. I do have the Kreg track saw which can get the straight cuts started. Since it’s a 2.5 inch deep cut, then I figured I can use the jigsaw and hand tools to get the rest cut out.

Cut the piece using the table saw or a sliding compound miter saw before assembling the table. If it's too late for that, careful use of an ocillating multi-tool will do the job.

If its already assembled you can use a circular saw to make a cut for each side of the cutout. Then make several additional cuts in the middle to remove most of the material. Follow up with an oscillating tool or small saw (like a coping saw blade) to make a horizontal cut on the bottom and remove the rest of the material.

Bruce that looks way to short a distance to get a circular saw into without hitting the saw.

The picture angle makes it hard to tell, but you may be right. I also assumed that the table saw would be relatively simple to unbolt and move out of the way, but maybe not.

Thanks all. I winded up using a jigsaw with a straightedge. The jigsaw had a depth of 2 1/4 inches so it did the job pretty well.

Then just a coping saw as you mentipned
